Conference on the History and Culture of Salmast
04.04.19 - 01.06.19

We enthusiastically invite scholars and graduate students investigating different aspects of the history and culture of the Salmast region to present the results of their recent research at a conference to be held in Yerevan on September 6-7, 2019 under the aegis of the Narekatsi Chair in Armenian Studies at UCLA, the Department of Iranian Studies at Yerevan State University, and the Oriental Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Work in progress is encouraged. Research papers are accepted on all related humanities and social-science disciplines, including, but not limited to: linguistics, literature, history, art history, architecture, sociology, anthropology, economics, and international relations. We encourage comparative themes and interdisciplinary approaches. The official languages of the conference are English, Armenian, and Farsi.

Applicants should submit abstracts of no more than 250 words and their curriculum vitae by 1 June, 2018 to the dedicated e-mail address

Abstracts should provide a brief description of the work, clearly outlining the theoretical perspectives and methodology to be applied in the paper and specifying any audiovisual facilities required.

Participants will be allotted twenty minutes to present their papers. An online publication of the conference proceedings is proposed for later in the year.

A post-conference reception is planned for the evening of September 6 to allow presenters an opportunity to interchange with local scholars and students. The following day an excursion is being arranged for participants to visit sites where the Salmast heritage is still perpetuated.

The organizing committee expects to be able to offer three nights accommodation for paper presenters from out of town. It is requested that participants make their own round-trip travel arrangements. Limited travel grants are available to assist those who might otherwise be unable to attend.
