Matenadaran summarizes the Armenian written culture (and not only Armenian written culture) history of other nations. Matenadaran after Mesrop Mashtots created the Armenian alphabet was invented as far back as the 5th century, when the first translations from Armenian and Armenian bibliography formed a separate genre. That same century also established the first library at the Catholicosate of Etchmiadzin Vagharshapat, as evidenced by Lazar P'arpetsi.
Catholicos of Echmiadzin and Matenadaran manuscript centers in Armenia and the world is created and saved on the base of Manuscripts of Matenadaran after Mesrop Mashtots. Around 20,300 units a centralized depository of manuscripts covering almost all of ancient and medieval science and culture.
