Only one division functioned in the structure of the university, founded in 1919. It was the Division of History and Language. From the very beginning this division played a great role in teaching of the Armenian language. In fact this division became one of the key structures, occupied in the area of Armenological researches. From the very beginning the preparation of specialists in this sphere was put on a strong platform. And it became possible owing to many prominent intellectuals of the time: M. Abeghyan, H. Acharyan, G.Ghapantsyan, S. Malkhasyants, G. Sevak, A. Gharibyan, etc. The manual and monographs, authored by them, significantly supported the development of the Armenian Studies.
In 1926 - 1935 there was published “Armenian Root Dictionary” by H. Acharyan, which summarizes the whole 40 years of hard work. This dictionary is a significant work not only in the Armenian reality, but also in the area of global linguistics and has got its unique place among the works of this prominent scientist. The monograph of M. Abeghyan “Armenian Language Theory” was published in 1931. The provisions of the Armenian grammatical idea up today develop on the basis of this research. A new powerful scientific potential was created, which became the basis for the development of the Armenian Studies and management of human resources. In 1934 there was published the monograph “Armenian Language Grammar”, authored by A. Gharibyan. First and second volumes of the research “Theory of Modern Armenian Language”, made by G. Sevak, were published in 1939 and 1947 respectively. In 1955 the third volume of the research, Modern Armenian Language Course”, was published. These and later published works had an important role for the progress of the Armenian Linguistics and became the basis for the development of scientific activities by coming generations. Lecturers of the chair, along with their scientific researches, regularly design manuals and guides on the preparation of specialists in the Armenian language.
In different years lecturers of the chair have published monographs, made researches in the areas of different issues, have designed numerous methodological manuals. The stylistics, relatively young branch of the linguistics, is being widely researched by the specialists of this chair, too.
The scientific researches are made in the following directions: phonetics of modern Eastern and Western Armenian, science of word, grammatical issues, studies on stylistics, theoretical and practical issues of the translation. Monographs, guides, manuals, scientific articles are being periodically published in the areas of all above mentioned branches of the linguistics.
