Only one division functioned in the structure of the university, founded in 1919. It was the Division of History and Language. From the very beginning this division played a great role in teaching of the Armenian language. In fact this division became one of the key structures, occupied in the area of Armenological researches. From the very beginning the preparation of specialists in this sphere was put on a strong platform. And it became possible owing to many prominent intellectuals of the time: M. Abeghyan, H. Acharyan, G.Ghapantsyan, S. Malkhasyants, G. Sevak, A. Gharibyan, etc. The manual and monographs, authored by them, significantly supported the development of the Armenian Studies.

In 1926 - 1935 there was published “Armenian Root Dictionary” by H. Acharyan, which summarizes the whole 40 years of hard work. This dictionary is a significant work not only in the Armenian reality, but also in the area of global linguistics and has got its unique place among the works of this prominent scientist. The monograph of M. Abeghyan “Armenian Language Theory” was published in 1931. The provisions of the Armenian grammatical idea up today develop on the basis of this research. A new powerful scientific potential was created, which became the basis for the development of the Armenian Studies and management of human resources. In 1934 there was published the monograph “Armenian Language Grammar”, authored by A. Gharibyan. First and second volumes of the research “Theory of Modern Armenian Language”, made by G. Sevak, were published in 1939 and 1947 respectively. In 1955 the third volume of the research, Modern Armenian Language Course”, was published. These and later published works had an important role for the progress of the Armenian Linguistics and became the basis for the development of scientific activities by coming generations. Lecturers of the chair, along with their scientific researches, regularly design manuals and guides on the preparation of specialists in the Armenian language.

In different years lecturers of the chair have published monographs, made researches in the areas of different issues, have designed numerous methodological manuals. The stylistics, relatively young branch of the linguistics, is being widely researched by the specialists of this chair, too.

The scientific researches are made in the following directions: phonetics of modern Eastern and Western Armenian, science of word, grammatical issues, studies on stylistics, theoretical and practical issues of the translation. Monographs, guides, manuals, scientific articles are being periodically published in the areas of all above mentioned branches of the linguistics.

Chair of the History of Armenian Language was founded in1985. In 1985-1990 the chair was headed by Dr. of Philology, Prof. Hovhannes Barseghyan, and in 1990-1995 - Dr. of Philology, Prof. Manvel Asatryan. Beginning with 1995 up now the chair is headed by Dr. of Philology, Prof. Ruben Ghazaryan.

The professorial staff of the faculty is composed of thirteen members: Professor-1, PhD, associate professors - 7, assistants -2, lecturer - 1.

More than a dozen PhD students develop their research activities at the chair, defending theses, work at the educational and scientific institutions of Armenia, different communities of the Armenian Diaspora. Citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Khosrov Malek-Mohammad, who has Persian origin, has defended PhD thesis at the faculty, too.

In recent years, an unprecedented interest towards the Old Armenian has increased. Probationers from the Czech Republic, Italy, France and Saint-Petersburg have worked at the chair, too.

Subjects on the Old Armenian, Armenian Language History, Medium Armenian, Science on Dialects, Science on Vocabularies are taught at the faculty.

The Chair prepares specialists in the area of Old Armenian and History of Armenian Language (BA, MA, PhD).

Lecturers of the chair have periodically published manuals, textbooks, monographs, dictionaries and multifaceted articles.

Chair of General Linguistics is one of the oldest ones at Yerevan State University. It was founded in 1920.

Since the foundation of the chair, its curriculum has included three major theoretical courses: General Linguistics, Theory of the Armenian Language, History of the Armenian language. Also, the following subjects have been taught: Introduction to Linguistics, Comparative Grammar of the Indo-European languages, Armenian Dialectology, Old Armenian, Sanskrit, Latin, Persian history, etc.

Currently, a great variety of general, special and optional subjects in the areas of the theory and history of linguistics are taught by the specialists of the chair: Principles of Linguistics, General Linguistics, History of Linguistics, Linguophilosophy, Linguistic Semiotics, Comparative Grammar of the Armenian Language, Comparative Grammar of the Romance and Germanic Languages, Linguistic Typology, Methods of Linguistic Research, etc. Since 1995 classical languages (Latin and Ancient Greek) have also been taught here. Since 2006 the chair has been running the complete specialization courses of Georgian Studies and Modern Greek.

The professorial staff of the chair includes Vardan Petrosyan (Head of the Chair, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor), Liana Hovsepyan (Sc. D. in Philology, Professor), Ashot Abrahamyan, Ashot Hayrapetyan, Tsovinar Harutyunyan, Sargis Avetyan (PhD in Philology, Associate Professors), Garik Mkrtchyan (PhD in Philology, Assistant), Karine Grigoryan, (Lecturer), Edita Asatryan (Laboratory Assistant).

The Chair of General Linguistics prepares PhD and research students in the specializations of general and applied linguistics, history of linguistics, linguistic typology, comparative grammar of the IE languages, psycholinguistics. The members of the small staff of the chair make their best to preserve the traditions established at the chair in the sphere of methodological-educational and research work. Current research, implemented at this chair, involves the following areas: theory and history of linguistics, semiotics, typology, formalized description of language, machine translation, comparative grammar of the Armenian language, comparative grammar of the IE languages, a number of issues related to the historical development of the Armenian language, grammatical structure of Old Armenian and classical languages. Various textbooks and manuals, as well as dictionaries on classical languages are compiled at the chair. Employees of the chair actively participate in the scientific life of the university, presenting reports at many republican and international conferences.

During its nearly 105-year history Yerevan State University has been and remains an important center for the development of various sciences, including Armenian literary studies. Since 1919 high-ranking specialists educated in foreign universities and scientists who had made a great contribution to Armenian studies were invited to work in the newly established university.

The chairs of Armenian, Russian and foreign literature, already operating in the university, were later supplemented by the chairs of aesthetics and literary theory and Soviet-Armenian literature (modern Armenian literature).

The chair of Armenian literature, which is the main center of the development of literary studies, is one of the oldest in the university and has been operating since 1929. Manuk Abeghyan, Arsen Terteryan, Simeon Hakobyan and other well-known scientists worked here, developed and taught the main subjects of the chair. Thanks to the best traditions created over the decades, the chair has become one of the main forges of practical Armenian studies, training literary experts and teachers of Armenian literature for educational and scientific institutions of Armenia and the Diaspora.

The lecturers of the chair are well-known names in the republic. Some of them are members of the Writers' Union of Armenia, authors of school and university textbooks or manuals and are engaged in literary criticism.

Scientific and methodical works have been written and are being written by experienced pedagogues-scientists, which ensure the continuity of scientific contributions and the traditions of Armenian studies developed over decades.

The chair regularly organizes scientific sessions (including international ones), in which both senior and younger generation of lecturers is taking part bringing their contribution to the study of Armenian literature.

The chair was headed by academicians Arsen Terteryan, Mkrtich Mkryan, Hrant Tamrazyan, Professor Samvel Muradyan. Since 2021, the head of the chair is Professor Albert Makaryan.

The Chair of Literary Theory and Literary Criticism is relatively young one in the Faculty of Armenian Philology of YSU. It was founded in 1972 under the name of the Chair of Literary Theory and Aesthetics. Its founding head of the chair in 1972-1986 was the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Eduard Jrbashyan. In 1982 by joining the chair of foreign literature, it was named the chair of foreign literature and literary theory, and since 1986 was headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Henrik Edoyan. Since 2007 the direction and name of the chair have been changed again. It was renamed the Chair of Literary Theory and Literary Criticism, the head of which in 2007-2015 was Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Zhenya Kalantaryan: since 2015 it was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Ashkhen Jrbashyan.

In 2022 the literary theory section of the chair was merged with the chair of Armenian literature, being named the Chair of Armenian Literature History and Literary Theory after Acad. Hrant Tamrazyan. It is headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Albert Makaryan.

The department is constantly working on organizing scientific seminars, updating programs and training new staff.

The Chair of Modern Armenian Literature was founded in 1968. It was previously called the Chair of Soviet Armenian Literature. In 1991 it was renamed into the Chair of Modern Armenian Literature, as it includes the studies in the area of the literature not only of Soviet Armenians, but also the Diaspora and post-Soviet period.

In 1968 - 1981 the chair was headed by the NAS RA Academician Hrant Tamrazyan and beginning with 1981 up now – Dr. of Philology, Professor Vazgen Gabriyelyan.

Initially six employees were occupied in the educational-research activities of the chair, later two more members joined them. All the current members of the chair have defended their candidate and doctoral theses at the very chair. Seven members of the chair are doctors of sciences: V. Gabriyelyan, Garnik Ananyan (later the Founder Dean of the Faculty of Journalism), Zhenya Kalantaryan ( now head of the Chair of Theory and Criticism of Literature), Larisa Mnatsakanyan, Kim Aghabekyan, Sergey Atabekyan (died in 2000), Artsrun Avagyan (now the Armenian Philology Faculty Dean). Four others are candidates: Seyran Grigoryan, Armen Ghazaryan, Armenuhi Arzoumanyan, Siranush Dvoyan. More than two dozen PhD students and applicants of chair, having defended their theses, are currently occupied in the educational and scientific institutions in different cities, different communities of Diaspora.

Five representatives of the Armenian Diaspora have defended candidate theses at the chair. And a probationer from Lebanon, Grigor Shahinyan, has defended a doctoral thesis.

Studies and trainings in the following areas are implemented at the faculty: the history of Armenian modern classic and contemporary literature, individual authors’ works (including Diaspora), theory of criticism, the Armenian critical thought and methodology of teaching History of Armenian literature. The Chair prepares specialists in the area of modern Armenian literature and literary criticism (BA, MA, PhD).

Lecturers of the chair are eminent personalities in the republic; most of them are members of the Writers’ Union of Armenia. They are engaged in literary criticism, preparation of school and university textbooks.
