The chair of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry was established in April 2013 based on the Departments of Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. Dr. Sci. Professor Romik S. Harutyunyan was elected as a first head of chair.
The department of Inorganic Chemistry, as well as Analytical Chemistry were among the fundamental departments of Yerevan State University and had an important role in development of Chemistry in Armenia. The departments were established in 1923. The first Head of the chair was outstanding scientist, Prof. Levon A. Rotinyan (1879-1964) until 1934. From 1934 to 1937 the head of department was famous Prof. Ghazar Ter-Ghazaryan. In 1937 - 1950 the head of chair was Derenik H. Marukhyan, who was the founder of coordination chemistry in Armenia. In 1950 - 1962 the head of chair was Tiran T. Ghazanchyan, who had based teaching of physicochemical analysis in the chair. In 1962 - 1969 the head of chair was prof. Mamikon T. Darbinyan, and in 1969-1983 Hrant G. Babayan, who had founded “Scientific Laboratory of Chemistry and Technology of Rare and Scattered Elements” within the chair. He had stimulated the development process of industrial and mineral waste as well as completed the chair by a number of inorganic chemists. In 1984-1989 the head of chair was Sargis N. Avagyan, in 1989 - 2007 - Sergey K. Grigoryan, in 2007-2019 – Prof. Romik S. Harutyunyan. Since 2019 to present, the head of chair is Associate Prof. Armen I. Martiryan.
As it was mentioned above the chair of Analytical Chemistry was established in 1923 by Prof. Levon Rotinyan, who was the head of chair in 1923-1938 and in 1942-1946. Since 1938 the chair was separated from Inorganic Chemistry and the first head of department was Vergine M. Taranyan (1905-1985) who later had become a corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of SSRA in 1956 and was the head of chair in 1938-1942, 1946-1954 and 1962-1977. In 1954-1962 the head of chair was Prof. Mamikon T. Darbinyan, in 1978-1983 – Associate Prof. Zhenya N. Hovsepyan, and in 1983-2013 – Prof. Hambardzum G. Khachatryan.
The main directions of research include:
a) The synthesis and study of catalytic and biologically active complex compounds;
b) The synthesis of inorganic compounds, study of their properties and possibilities of application;
c) The study of low temperature chemical transportation reactions;
d) The study of physicochemical properties of solutions.
e) The synthesis and study of novel hybrid mineral polymeric absorbents by high performance liquid chromatography.
f) The modification of natural absorbents and their application.
g) High temperature self-spreading synthesis (HTSS), the study of its kinetics and the development of novel methods of synthesis of ceramic composites.
The chair collaborates with the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland), Institute of Surface Chemistry of NAU (Kiev), Institute of Solution Chemistry of RAS (Ivanovo), as well as Technological Universities of Notre-Dame (USA), Texas Brownsville (USA) and MISIS of Moscow. Among the collaborators are also State University of Tver (Russia), Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of Minsk (Belarus), Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of NAS RA, Institute of Chemical Physics of NAS RA, “Materials Science” SIU, State Universities of Vanadzor, Goris and Stepanakert.
Two Professors, seven Associate Professors, three Professor Assistants, two lecturers, six persons of educational staff are working at the chair at present. There are two scientific laboratories based on the chair - "Inorganic Chemistry" (Head is Prof. R. Harutyunyan, 4 researchers), and "Estimation and Prediction of the environmental pollution and Ecological Safety" (Head is Associate Prof. A. Martiryan, 3 researchers).
More than 300 scientific papers were published during last 15 years in national and international journals. The staff of chair has participated a number of international conferences. “The Programming Issues of Inorganic Chemistry” methodological book by Associate Prof. R. Sargsyan (1991), the textbooks “General Chemistry” by Prof. S.K. Grigoryan (2002), “The Practice of General and Inorganic Chemistry” by S.K. Grigoryan, R. Sargsyan, E. Ghapantsyan (2003, 2007), "Electrochemical methods of Analysis" by S.V. Vardanyan, H.H. Darbinyan (2005), and "Laboratory Experiments of Chemistry" by R. Adamyan, T. Ghochikyan, G. Simonyan (2011, 2013) have been published. The books "Inorganic Chemistry (two volumes). Chemistry of non-transitional elements" Book 1 (2018) and Book 2 (2018), "Inorganic Chemistry (two volumes). Chemistry of transitional elements" Book 1 (2020) and Book 2 (2021) by Associate Prof. R. Adamyan and many other educational-methodological papers have been published.
The members of stuff were awarded by annual award of President of RA in the area of Natural Sciences (H.G. Khachatryan in 2005, S.S. Hayrapetyan in 2008, S.L. Kharatyan, Kh.V. Manukyan, H.L. Khachatryan in 2008).
The chair performs educational courses with more than 600 students in the following departments of Yerevan State University: chemistry, biology, geology and geography, Institute of Pharmacy, as well as in the department of improving the qualification of teaching stuff.
