Department of discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science was formed in 2006 by merger of Department of discrete mathematics and Department of algebra-logical methods in informatics.

Undergraduate courses include discrete mathematics, algebra, combinatorial optimisation, computer algebra, mathematical logic, theory of algorithms, operations research, coding theory, information security, graph theory, mathematical cybernetics, pattern recognition, combinatorial algorithms and complexity analysis.

Master of Sciences specialisation is “Discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science”.

Major research fields include discrete mathematics, discrete extremal problems, applied algebra, graph theory, VLSI design, Boolean function theory, coding theory, theory of algorithms, mathematical logic, complexity theory, operations research, cryptography etc.

Scientific research in the following directions are carried out: computational mathematics, approximation theory, mathematical modelling, theory of differential equations and theory of functions.

Two projects supported by the government of Republic of Armenia are fulfiled:

1. “Development of fast computational algorithms for high dimensional algebraic problems” (2008-2010, project manager – DSc, professor Yu.R.Hakopian)

2. “Multivariate polynomial interpolation” (2008-2010, project manager – DSc, H.A.Hakopian)

The Chair of Programming and Information Technologies was opened in the beginning of 2007 in the Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics of the Yerevan State University as a result of restructuring done for the enlargement of chairs.

In fact, the chair has a history of half a century. In autumn 1957 Chair of Computational Mathematics was opened in the faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In January 1958 R.I.Podlovchenco (from Moscow), a pupil of A.A.Lyapunov, became a head of the Chair and made a great contribution to its establishment and further developing. In 1971 the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (now, Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics) grew out of this Chair. In 1972 the Chair of Computational Mathematics was divided in two: Chair of Mathematical Cybernetics and Chair of Computer Software. Afterwards two more chairs separated from the Chair of Computer Software: Chair of Computers and Programming (1975) and Chair of Algorithmic Languages (1991).

In 1996 the chairs of Computer Software and of Computers and Programming joined and formed the Chair of System Programming. In 2007 the Chair of System Programming and the Chair of Algorithmic Languages joined and formed the Chair of Programming and Information Technologies, which is the only programming chair in the Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics at present. The chair provides all the Batchelor Courses of the Faculty, related to its profile. The chair also provides the Masters programme “Software of computers, computing systems and networks”, which is very popular among the students. The post-graduate students of the Chair take part in scientific research of the Chair, which is pursued in the following basic directions:

1. Programming Languages and Systems
2. Functional Programming and Lambda Calculus
3. Logic Programming
4. Architecture of Computing Systems and Networks

The Chair is also carrying out a financially supported scientific research: 1027 “Transformation and Interpretation of Functional and Logical Programs”.

Imbued with the traditions of half a century, the Chair of Programming and Information Technologies is nowadays the main provider of highly-qualified programmers for all the organizations in Armenia, where they are required.
