THE PROBLEM IS IN THE LOW LEVEL OF AWARENESS...
The results of the research “The sexual harassment at the workplace as a factor hindering the professional advancement of women” were presented.

On April 16, YSU Centre for Gender and Leadership Studies hosted the presentation of the results of the research, made by the lecturers at YSU Faculty of Sociology Yuliana Melkumyan and Nvard Melkonyan. The research was implemented in the framework of the CGLS small grant program, supported by the USAID.

Director of the CGLS Gohar Shahnazaryan said this research is unique and focuses on a quite important issue.

“It is somewhat taboo to speak about these problems in our society. The results of this study clearly describe the current situation, the authors give appropriate recommendations based on them,” - said Gohar Shahnazaryan.

The results show that the causes of the sexual harassment at the workplace are the legislative gaps, lack of quick response mechanisms, lack of mechanisms for the protection of women, gender stereotypes, socially tolerant attitude towards the phenomenon, the gender socialization Masculine model of our society, as well as the low level of awareness of the rights’ protection mechanisms.

“If the rape has mechanisms of punishment as is a crime, the sexual coercion does not have, as it does not leave evidence,” - said Yuliana Melkumyan.

Nvard Melkonyan added sometimes it is difficult to tell “harassment” and “encroachment” from each other as from the linguistic point of view they have equal meaning.
