In the sphere of higher education the priorities of the state policy are the principles of self-governance of the higher educational institutions and respect of academic freedom. These principles are the main pillars of higher education development in the Republic of Armenia, and their guarantee by the government is of high significance. The mentioned above is witnessed by the announcement made by the RA Prime Minster at the meeting of the RA National Assembly related to respecting university self-governance and recognizing unnecessary interference in the process unacceptable.
However, prior to the 100th anniversary of the University, in the contrary to this attitude, some bodies and officials of state authorities try to break that principle following various motives and using some methods discredit Yerevan State University and the idea of YSU Centennial. The appropriate organization of the jubilee event requires uniting of efforts of the government, wide layers of public and the whole staff of YSU which will contribute to evaluation of the 100-year path of the University and to outlining its development concept.
For this reason we consider such an approach to be annoying and taking into account the highly important role of Yerevan State University in the statehood, economics, education, science and culture of our country we think that it discredits the authority not only of the University but of the whole state in general and violates the international principles of self-governance of the academic institutions and their academic freedom.
In such conditions YSU Academic Council urges:
• To respect the principle of university self-governance and academic freedoms,
• To take immediate actions to ensure appropriate organization of the Centennial of YSU.
