SCREENING OF A PICTURE ABOUT HAMSHEN: THE VISIT TO LEBANON CAME TO ITS FINISH LINE
The film “Hamshen at the crossroads of the past and the future” by YSU lecturer Lusine Sahakyan was presented to the Armenian community of Lebanon.

This documentary was shown on November 6 in the hall “Pyunik” of the newspaper “Azdak”. This action completed the visit of the delegation of Yerevan State University to Lebanon. The author of the film - Head of the Division of the Armenian-Ottoman Relations of YSU Institute for Armenian Studies, Associate Professor at the Chair of Turkic Studies Lusine Sahakyan was also present at this event.

Before the screening started, Huri Papazyan-Emmiyan said in recent years the problems of Hamshen Armenians have become an integral part of our reality: “Lusine Sahakyan played a major role in identifying information about Hamshen. In her film, she has shown generations of Hamshen Armenians, forcibly converted to Islam in the 18th century in the Ottoman Empire, they now mostly live in Riza, Erzurum and Ardvin.”

Then the author of the film spoke about the process of making this documentary, noting that the research in Hamshen was her long-standing dream. As a result of two years of work Hamshen was studied village by village. Lusine Sahakyan gathered many facts and documented information about Hamshen.

After the publication of the book and the presentation of the film the Turks started to attack: they again made attempts to rewrite the history and to present it in their own aspect.

“The film begins with loud cries, which are used for communication in Hamshen. The film tells us about the special Hamshen Taraz (Armenian national dress), their culture, dialects, music, folklore,” - said Lusine Sahakyan.

In 2012 this documentary received a prize at the international festival “Arpa”, and has also participated in the festivals “Golden Apricot”, “Pomegranate” and others.

At the end of the event the Deputy Director of the Institute for Armenian Studies of Yerevan State University Mher Hovhannisyan made a speech.

“In the framework of the visit, our delegation met with more than 200 representatives of youth, and focused on the educational programs. Thanks to these efforts in the past 4 years, many Lebanese Armenians entered Yerevan State University. We visited 11 schools and will assist these structures in the issue of the professional literature,” - said Mr. Hovhannisyan and called on local teachers to take part in the summer school of the RA Ministry of Diaspora “Diaspora”.
