This is the 58th edition of this prestigious international competition. It was held on April 9-15 in Washington. This year, 130 (from 700 total) teams from around the world participated in the international around. This figure is maximal in the history of the competition.
National stage of the competition was held in February this year. The best result was shown by YSU team. We should note that five Armenian teams participated in this stage. YSU team received the right to represent Armenia in the international stage. The team of the Faculty of Law was composed of PhD students Lilit Petrosyan and Gevorg Poghosyan, master students Mariam Ghazaryan and Martin Stepanyan. The coaches were the lecturers Karen Gevorgyan and Taron Simonyan.
In Washington Yerevan State University team had four appearances and won in three of them, beating the teams of Egypt, Canada and Afghanistan, and lost the US team due to the small difference in points. In three games, our team members have been recognized as the best speakers.
However, our team has registered satisfactory results, taking 39th place, leaving behind teams from neighboring countries (Turkey - 41, Georgia - 43, Azerbaijan - 118).
“This competition is part of the university course; our students make preparations for several months. 17 teams have appeared which have had four victories. That is, when you consider the overall picture, the results of our team are good enough,” - said the Dean of the faculty Gagik Ghazinyan, adding that very soon they will start preparations for the next year.
The case in which the teams had to appear as the plaintiff and defendant, was announced in September of the last year. Every year there is a case on any problem of global significance, this year the theme was the human right to water and sanitation and the investigator was the UN International Court.
“Compared with previous years, this time we changed tactics a bit. We decided that the responsibility should be on the team. It was ultimately successful because the team felt more confident, and the coach was acting purely as a guide. They carried out their research, and 2-3 times a week we held our regular meetings. After passing the written work we began to focus on the oral speech. And the fact that members of this team had the experience in the participation in this moot, as well as other similar competitions helped us a lot, too,” - said Taron Simonyan.
