The expedition, headed by Director of NAS RA Institute of History Ashot Melkonyan, after traveling to Western Armenia decided to conquer the top of Mount Ararat, a height of 4165 m. And the dream came to life. When they came back the movie Ararat: Armenian mystery of immortality. was shot. Today, the film was shown in YSU Academic Council hall. Students, professorial staff and numerous guests were present.
The film is a historical and geographical background of Mount Ararat: from ancient times to present days. And the history of the mountain, and climb on it: starting with Hakob Mtsbnetsi (in 4th century he made an attempt to conquer the mountain) to the expedition of Parrot and modernity. In addition to historical facts of the earlier period, the film includes details of the climb and expedition.
On the 10th of August at 08:45 the first man from the expedition walked to the top of the biblical mountain. An interesting fact was that the ascent was carried out on 8-10 of August, so that to reach the top on the 10th of August, on a very important day for us - a day of signing of Tbilisi and Sevres treaties, we had to be on the top of Ararat ... We waved the Armenian flag, sang national anthem of the independent homeland and danced Kochari - said the author of the film and the expedition leader Ashot Melkonyan.
The ascent was difficult, many obstacles were overcome: according to the special decree by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan it was forbidden for Armenians to climb Ararat. In recent years several such cases were registered: several foreign expeditions were not able to climb the Ararat only because Armenians were in their groups. According to Ashot Melkonyan, their expedition had a success owing to the method adopted in Turkey - money.
One of the most famous events of 2006 has found its place in the film: the expedition under the guidance of YSU lecturer Gevorg Hatchyan took the heart of Hovhannes Shiraz on Mount Ararat: this poet had instructed his eldest son, Ara Shiraz, to do so in one of his poems.
Many of my peers are not lucky enough to go to Ararat. But you will have many more chances to do so. I sincerely envy you, - said YSU Rector Aram Simonyan to our students after the end of the movie.
The film was shown in several places: in November at the cinema Moscow the premiere of the film took place after which the film was shown in Gyumri, London, Beirut and Greece. Aram Simonyan promised to organize one more watch of this film in May, on the occasion of 90th anniversary of Yerevan State University foundation, in a larger room.
Recently a book was published under the same title by Ashot Melkonyan. Once I have gathered a lot of materials on Ararat, and I have always wanted to write a book. This circumstance accelerated publication of this book. The book is an expanded version of the film, about 100 pages - said the author. In the end of the meeting the author gave to YSU library 2 copies of the book and CD with the movie.
