On September 18-19 representatives of YSU Institute for Armenian Studies, headed by YSU Rector Aram Simonyan, participated in the two-day international scientific conference in Rostov-on-Don.
The conference “Cossacks and Mountaineers in the First World War” was organized by the Institute for Social-Economic and Humanities Researches of the Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
YSU Rector Aram Simonyan, being member of the organizing committee of the conference, stressed in his opening speech on the importance of studying the First World War topic, focusing on the joint researches of Armenian and Russian specialists.
The report “Transcaucasia in the years of the First World War by the Russian eyewitness” was made by the Deputy Director of the Institute for Armenian Studies Mher Hovhannisyan.
The participants discussed a number of problems. Most of the reports referred to the activities of the volunteer units in the south of Russian Empire in 1914-1918.
YSU delegation visited also the RA Consulate in Rostov-on-Don, accompanied by The Consul General of Armenia in Rostov-on-Don Ararat Gomtsyan and Chairman of the Armenian community “New Nakhijevan” Harutyun Surmalyan. The parties focused on the programs of YSU, related to the region.
A meeting was held with the Director of the Southern Scientific Center G. Matishov. The projects, implemented in the framework of the agreements signed between the two parties, were discussed; the plans for further cooperation were outlined.
Aram Simonyan and Mher Hovhannisyan visited Rostov-on-Don State Technical University at the invitation of Rector B. Meskhe. As a result of the meeting the parties decided to prepare an agreement on cooperation.
YSU representatives held meetings with a number of intellectuals of the Armenian community of Rostov-on-Don. Community’s executive director Sergei Sayadov and Mher Hovhannisyan discussed the joint projects for the period of the last three years. YSU Rector Aram Simonyan was awarded the title of an honorary member of the community and an order.
Guests from Armenia visited Armenian Church in the Chaltr village of Myasnikyan region, populated by Armenians, as well as historical-cultural museum of Armenians.
Aram Simonyan and Mher Hovhannisyan also visited the Armenian-Russian Friendship Cultural and Historical Museum of Rostov-on-Don.
