Scientific seminar on Islamized Armenians of Turkey was organized by the SSS of Faculty of Oriental Studies of Yerevan State University. The seminar, organized with the participation of students of the Chair of Turkish Studies, was conducted in a non-standard format.
Organizers invited the Director of Scientific-research Foundation Center for the Study of Western Armenian Issues Haykazun Alvrdyan, who read a small lecture and answered students questions before the students started to represent their standpoints.
The theme is very actual and urgent. In Turkey the Armenian religious community is studied on a very serious level, and in Armenia, representatives of state authorities receive information about the problem from such independent researchers, as we are,- said Haykazun Alvrdyan.
According to him, because of the corresponding treatment, the absolute majority of Armenians is not even aware that many Armenians live in Turkey. Meanwhile, the Armenians live there and struggle to retain their national identity: language and culture.
As the SSS Chairman of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Yerevan State University Lilit Poghosyan noted, despite the fact that it is very important to discuss the issue in a political context, within the framework of the seminar the ethno-linguistic aspect was focused on.
A scientist who visited the future turkologists for the first time, highlighted the format of the debate and noted that in particular they should, where possible, deep look into the matter, realizing the cause of any political gain it could become.
