About faculty

The Department of Journalism at Yerevan State University was founded in the 1949-1950 academic year. In 1954, among the first graduates of the journalism department were famous writers and public speakers Vardges Petrosyan, Artashes Kalantaryan, Dr. of Philology Lida Gevorgyan, one of the devotees of Armenian press history, and others. There are also many famous names among the graduates of the following years.

It is symbolic that in the 1960s-80s, the editors of "Garun" magazine, which had an exceptional role in the literary, social, and cultural life of Armenia, were graduates of the YSU journalism department. Two of the presidents of the Union of Writers of Armenia graduated from the department.

Graduates of the Department of Journalism also played a key role in shaping and leading the national liberation movement of 1988, some of them were among the prominent figures of the legislative and executive authorities of the Third Republic of Armenia in the 1990s.

The Department of Journalism originally operated as part of the Faculty of Philology and was periodically closed and reopened through the efforts of dedicated and visionary individuals. Finally, on October 1, 1999, the Faculty of Journalism was founded by the decision of the YSU Academic Council.

The faculty operates a three-level system of full-time and part-time education, the latter was opened in 2007 providing a Bachelor's degree, and in 2011, a Master's degree as well. During their studies, students receive high-quality professional education, acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills and becoming sought-after and competitive professionals in the labor market. The best graduates of the Master's degree programs continue their studies in Postgraduate studies and then join the faculty,

The best specialists of the republic, including professors, associate professors, and candidates of science, teach at the Faculty of Journalism. Many of them undergo training in prestigious international educational and scientific institutions and are also involved in local and international research programs.

As a scientific and educational center, the faculty values the capabilities of not only professors but also students. Their best reports and publications are encouraged with special prizes, and published in various collections.

Taking into account the fact that the Armenian media field is changing and developing day by day, the faculty constantly updates the educational programs it offers.

Every year, the Faculty of Journalism expands cooperative relations with leading Armenian and foreign universities, as well as signs memorandums and agreements with leading media and journalistic organizations.

Many students of the faculty have received education in foreign universities within the framework of exchange programs. They actively participate especially in Erasmus+ and Erasmus Mundus programs. At the same time, the faculty offers courses in English for foreign students.

There are student organizations in the Faculty of Journalism, and by their initiative, various events are regularly organized to develop students' journalistic skills.

Most of the students of the faculty start professional work right from their years of study. Graduates of the Faculty of Journalism have the opportunity to work in the editorial offices of newspapers and magazines, radio and television companies, news agencies, Internet media, press services of various departments, international and local organizations, government agencies, and elsewhere.
