Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Art
Doctor of Arts, Professor Levon Babken Chugaszyan established the YSU Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Art in 1996. Since its establishment, the chair has been organizing training in the "Artology" educational program (Undergraduate and Master's program).
The professorial staff of the Chair of Armenian Art History and Theory has been engaged in presenting issues of Armenian art history and the heritage of artists on international platforms for many years. Chair members actively participate in national and international conferences, presenting reports, as well as giving lectures in universities and museums of different countries. The Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Art has organized conferences on issues of Armenian art in Yerevan, Moscow, and St. Petersburg, as well as in Austria, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Germany, France, and the USA.
With the efforts of the staff of the chair, the study, recording, and scientific cooperation of the treasures of Armenian art kept in the Armenian churches and museums of Romania began in 2012 along with Romanian specialists. With the scholarships of the State Committee of Science of RA ESCS Ministry, the chair has organized scientific expeditions and conducted research in Iran in the direction of studying the pieces of Armenian art of the Artak Manukyan Museum in Tehran, the Amenaprkich Monastery Museum in Isfahan.
The Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Art closely cooperates with the Art Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran, the National Gallery of Armenia, the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the Museum of Russian Art. The researchers and leading specialists of those institutions teach in the art studies department of the university, undergo regular training, and are involved in international and local grant programs.
The Chair of Armenian Art History and Theory created the Armenian Art Library, filling it with books donated by institutions and individuals in Armenia and other countries.
