At the YSU Faculty of History, Masayuki Ishimoto, a postgraduate student at the Osaka Metropolitan University (Japan) and the Chair of Armenian History, Yerevan State University, delivered a lecture titled "Armenian Press and Russian Empire’s Policy Towards Armenian Church".
The complex relationship between the Russian Empire and the Armenian Church in the 19th century is central to the research of the postgraduate student from the Chair of Armenian History. Masayuki Ishimoto studied Armenian press materials on the issue.
The speaker mainly referred to the publications of the "Mshak" newspaper. Masayuki Ishimoto presented how the paper responded to the Russian Empire's attempts to interfere in Armenian religious matters and integrate religious communities into the imperial system.
Masayuki Ishimoto also touched upon the relationship between the Russian Empire and "Mshak". In particular, he emphasized the role of each editor in shaping the relations of "Mshak" with the empire.
The postgraduate student from the YSU Chair of Armenian History pointed out that the governmental decisions and official writings of the Russian Empire shed light on press censorship and regulation within the empire. Masayuki Ishimoto explained how censorship and control policies influenced Armenian press publications to freely discuss the relationship between the Armenian Church and the Russian Empire.
The speaker pointed out that there are interesting and valuable publications in the Armenian press regarding the changes in Russian policy towards the Armenian Church due to the political situation in the region in the second half of the 19th century.
It’s important to note that the postgraduate student of the Chair of Armenian History conducted his research using materials from both the Armenian National Archive and the Russian State Historical Archive and presented the results of the findings during the lecture.
Representatives from the teaching staff and students of the YSU Faculty of History, as well as other people interested in the topic, attended the lecture.
