Chair of History of Armenian Literature and Literary Theory after Academician Hr. Tamrazyan
Chair of History of Armenian Literature and Literary Theory after Academician Hrant Tamrazyan, which is the focus of the development of literary studies, is one of the oldest in the university.
It has been operating since 1929 named the Chair of the History of Armenian Literature. Manuk Abeghyan, Arsen Terteryan, Simeon Hakobyan and many other well-recognized scientists who developed and taught the main subjects of the chair worked here. Thanks to the best traditions created over the decades, the chair has become one of the main forges of practical Armenian studies, training literary specialists and teachers of Armenian literature for educational and scientific institutions of Armenia and the Diaspora.
The Chair of Literary Theory and Literary Criticism, which was founded in 1972 under the name of the Chair of Literary Theory and Aesthetics, was merged with the Chair of the History of Armenian Literature in 2022. From 1972-1986, its founder was Eduard Jrbashyan Academician of RA National Academy of Sciences. Joining the Chair of Foreign Literature in 1982, it was renamed the Chair of Foreign Literature and Literary Theory, which was led by Doctor of Philology, Professor Henrik Edoyan ( starting from 1986). In 2007, the direction and name of the chair were changed again. It was renamed the Chair of Literary Theory and Literary Criticism, whose leadership was taken by Professor, Doctor of Philological Sciences Zhenya Kalantaryan (2007-2015), and then by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Ashkhen Jrbashyan.
The lecturers of the Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Literature named after Academician Hrant Tamrazyan are well-known in the Republic. Some of them are members of the Writers' Union of Armenia, authors of school and university textbooks or manuals, and engaged in literary criticism.
Scientific and methodical works have been and are being written by experienced pedagogues-scientists, which ensure the continuity of scientific contributions and the growth of Armenian studies developed over decades.
The chair regularly organizes scientific sessions (including international ones) in which both senior and younger-generation professionals take part, contributing to the study of Armenian literature.
Today, the chair is constantly working on organizing scientific seminars, updating educational programs, and training new personnel. The directions of research and pedagogical activity of the Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Literature named after Academician Hrant Tamrazyan are:

• Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature,
• Modern Armenian Literature,
• Theory of Literature,
• History of Armenian Literary Studies.
The chair offers the "Armenian Language and Literature" Undergraduate and Master's (full-time and part-time) educational programs, as well as the "Armenian Literature" Master's program.
