New ways of cooperation with Yeungnam University in South Korea
YSU Chair of Botany and Mycology of the Faculty of Biology hosted honorary Professor Yong-Shik Kim from Yeungnam University in South Korea, who gave a lecture on the distribution and conservation of one of the endangered plants, Chinese ilex included in the Red Book.
During the lecture on "Distribution and preservation of Chinese ilex included in the Red Book in Chollipo Arboretum and Korea", the professor presented detailed professional information. Ilex, also known as holly, is a genus of evergreen plants native to East Asia, including China and Korea. The professor noted that ilex may be used in landscaping due to its decorative and glossy leaves, as well as attractive berries, and the berries (although they are poisonous), leaves, bark are used in traditional medicine in different countries.
Professor Yong-Shik Kim, referring to the purpose of his visit, emphasized that he expects to carry out scientific and educational activities with YSU, which will also provide an opportunity for YSU and Yeungnam University to implement a student exchange program.
The employees of the Chair of Botany and Mycology of the Faculty of Biology met the professor for the first time five years ago. This year, Professor Kim is giving a lecture at YSU for the second time.
Narine Zakaryan, Associate Professor of the Chair of Botany and Mycology, referring to the cooperation with the Yeungnam University in South Korea, noted that the professor's third visit to YSU is expected in the near future, during which cooperation is planned to be confirmed by a memorandum. One of the provisions of the memorandum will define the opportunity to implement professional training of students and professors at Yeungnam University.
Professor Yong-Shik Kim is also the Director of The IUCN SSC's Korean Plant Specialist Group (KPSG).
Students, employees of the Faculty of Biology and other guests were among the attendees at the lecture.
