YSU Organic Chemistry Laboratory to receive new equipment
YSU Organic Chemistry Laboratory of the Scientific Research Center of Chemistry is going to be armed with 10 pieces of equipment, which will provide the capability to generate better quality, faster and more modern data, improving the results of scientific research and the operation of the laboratory.
Within the framework of the competition "Providing financial support for the modernization of the material-technical base of scientific departments" announced by the Higher Education and Science Committee of the RA MoESCS, the laboratory will receive new equipment, which will be used to perform organic synthesis, as well as to study low-temperature asymmetric catalysis and describe obtained asymmetric products.
Referring to the importance of equipping the laboratory, Armen Galstyan, Deputy Dean of YSU Faculty of Chemistry, Candidate of Chemical Sciences and Associate Professor, emphasized, "The last major re-equipment of the laboratory took place about 20 years ago. Those daily used pieces of equipment have already worn out and are not usable now, therefore, the base re-equipment was a dire necessity."
The laboratory will receive 3 types of Hotplate Magnetic Stirrer to mix and heat different volumes of materials, Electronic Balance and Electronic Analytical Balance for accurate weighing of materials, Rotary Evaporator and Water Vacuum Pump for the latter, which are designed for evaporating materials, Fume Hood for work safety, as well as Chiller with cooling capacity down to -80°C to study low-temperature asymmetric catalysis lasting 24 hours or more and a set of asymmetric chiral columns of gas chromatography for the description of asymmetric products obtained as result of these processes.
Armen Galstyan emphasized that receiving Chiller with cooling capacity down to -80°C is an amazing achievement for the laboratory.
"Now we have equipment with cooling capacity down to -30°C, however, it is connected to the rotor system and is not designed for scientific experimentation, and the new chiller will provide us with the opportunity to study reactions at lower temperatures and over a longer period of time, which is very important for accurate research results," said A. Galstyan.
Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry emphasized that scientific and educational processes in the faculty are interconnected. The new devices will be used during studies, as well as scientific works within the framework of students' master's theses and other research. Therefore, both scientists and researchers, as well as students, will have the opportunity to use the devices.
It should be noted that the re-equipment will provide the opportunity to design and carry out new scientific researches, as well as to publish the results in high-ranking international scientific periodicals, contributing to one of the most important strategic priorities of YSU- the internationalization of the university.
