Demographic challenges in Armenia: Risks and opportunities
Demography is not only a science about population size but also the cornerstone through which a country's economic, social, and cultural future is determined. Today, Armenia faces serious demographic challenges that require thorough research and solutions. In an interview with us, Aram Vartikyan, Assistant Professor at the Chair of Applied Sociology, YSU Faculty of Sociology, shared his insights on these issues, the involvement of young professionals in the field, and the role of the university.

Demographic Challenges in Armenia
Addressing the consequences of the decline in population size, Aram Vartikyan stated: "Today, we stand before the decline in population and its consequences, which has a profound impact on economic, social, and cultural life. The disruption in the population size in Armenia is closely related to social and economic issues, and when we speak of a demographic crisis, we cannot separate it from the changes happening in our everyday lives. Fluctuations in population numbers alter the country’s economic model, affect the labor market, and force us to reassess our political priorities."

According to Aram Vartikyan, the labor market is directly linked to demographic fluctuations. "Even if we speak about the increasing automation of the labor market and the development of technology, there are still sectors where human resources cannot be replaced. We see that youth participation in the labor market is decreasing. This means that our most productive age group, the youth, is gradually 'disappearing' from the labor market. And this is a serious signal to be concerned about the future of the economy," he emphasized.
The Role of Young Researchers in Demographic Science
"Both in Armenia and internationally, demography is viewed as a secondary field, which is an extremely dangerous trend. In Armenia, there are virtually no expert demographers, and very few young people are involved in the field. It is undeniable that the future lies in the hands of the youth, but their involvement in this field is minimal because society does not consider it a primary area of interest, which is highly concerning," noted A. Vartikyan.
He added that demographic science today holds great potential, but this requires a clear strategy for state and academic support. "If we are to think about overcoming the demographic crisis today, we cannot ignore the role of young professionals. Their involvement must become a strategic goal. We cannot wait years for the training of specialists. It is essential to create conditions where young professionals can immediately enter the fields of science and policy," he emphasized.

University’s Role in the Advancement of Demographic Research
"The university plays a key role in the advancement of demographic research. Today, demography is taught in universities around the world. It is currently included in the educational programs of the Faculties of Geography, Geology, and Sociology, but there is still a noticeable lack of detailed study in this area," said the professor.
In Vartikyan’s opinion, demography should become an interdisciplinary science that encompasses various fields such as economics, sociology, and political science. "If we want to understand the essence of demographic changes, we must study them in a broader context, considering economic factors, migration flows, and the role of the education system. This should become a significant component of our scientific and political agenda," he stressed.
According to him, there is a need for programs that will unite young professionals, international experts, economists, and sociologists, allowing us to develop a comprehensive approach to our demographic future.
"Demography is not just about numbers; it is one of the main factors in the development of our country," concluded Aram Vartikyan.
It is also noteworthy that a memorandum of understanding was signed between Yerevan State University and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Armenia Office, with the goal of uniting their efforts to establish long-term cooperation and partnership in advancing the sustainable development agenda, particularly in areas of demographic resilience, youth empowerment, gender issues, data management, research, and the promotion of corporate social responsibility.
