"THIS DAY SHOULD BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR YOUTH TO UNDERSTAND THAT SPEAKING BEAUTIFUL AND LITERARY ARMENIAN IS A MODERN STYLE." TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
It should be reminded that in 1999 UNESCO declared February 21 as Mother Language Day.
It has been officially celebrated in Armenia for the past 15 years.
Ysu.am spoke with Narine Dilbaryan, Associate Professor at the Chair of Armenian Language at the Faculty of Armenian Philology of YSU, about the current state of the Armenian language, challenges and development trends.
According to her, Armenian, like the languages of many smaller states around the world, is struggling to remain impeccable, develop and prosper. "We are always tasked not to lose everything we inherited from Grabar, but at the same time to move forward and meet the challenges of the time. In the 21st century, individual states and their state languages face serious challenges because of globalization, foreign languages are constantly accessing not only our own but other languages as well, but I think our struggle always has its predecessors, and we always keep balance."
The solution to the problem, according to Associate Professor, is to create a relevant structure that will really deal with these issues.
Language, like human beings, is an evolving system and sometimes there is a constant need to exclude certain grammatical structures, to indicate which vocabulary structures are applicable, and which to remove, and so on.
