SOCIOLOGIST IMMANUEL MAURICE WALLERSTEIN PASSED AWAY
American sociologist Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein, one of the greatest theorists of modernity, passed away on August 31.
He invented world-systems analysis and published a series of books including The Modern World-System, The End of the World as We Know It: Social Science for the Twenty-First Century and a number of other books.
During the 2009 World Sociology Congress held at Yerevan State University, Immanuel Wallerstein met with the staff and students of the Faculty of Sociology and delivered a lecture.
Immanuel Wallerstein was born on 1930.
He studied sociology at Columbia University of New York and worked at the universities of Columbia (1958-1971), McGill (1971-1976), Binghamton (1976-1999) and Yale (from 2000).
He was the president of the International Sociological Association between 1994 and 1998. During the 1990s, he chaired the Gulbenkian Commission on the Restructuring of the Social Sciences.
Wallerstein is especially valued for his work on world-system and center/periphery theories and his criticism of capitalism. His publications and theories played a crucial role in rethinking modern history, particularly the history of capitalism and colonialism.
