Chair of Mechanics
The Department of Mechanics at the Faculty of Physics-Mathematics and Mechanics-Mathematics at Yerevan State University operated since the 1950s, with the Chair of Theoretical Mechanics and the Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity (since 1978, the Chair of Solid Mechanics). The founders of the Armenian school of mechanics, former rectors of YSU, and academicians Nagush Harutyunyan and Sergey Hambardzumyan, made significant contributions to the formation of the chairs.
In 1988, the Faculty of Mechanics was established, with academician Vladimir Sargsyan as its dean. In 2007, the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics was reorganized, and the Chair of Mechanics now operates under this faculty.
The professors, researchers, and graduates of the chairs greatly contributed to the rapid development of various directions of mechanics.
The chair offers the "Mechanics" bachelor's degree program and "Mechanics and Applied Mathematics" master's degree program. The chair also has a learning laboratory.
The chair's curricula include modern courses in mechanics and mathematics, covering theoretical mechanics, solid mechanics, theory of elasticity, hydroaeromechanics, variational calculus and optimization, control theory, mathematical physics, computational mathematics, and modern methods and technologies of programming.
During both bachelor's and master's programs, students are taught specialized professional courses in the mechanics of deformable solids, optimal design of mechanical systems, motion control, stabilization, and modeling.
The best graduates have the opportunity to continue their studies in post-graduate programs, specializing in "Mechanics of Deformable Solids" and "Theoretical Mechanics".
The chair's research areas include the interaction problems of deformable media and physical-mechanical fields, contact and mixed problems in the mathematical theory of elasticity, wave propagation and diffraction in elastic and electroelastic media, differential games in multi-objective problems, optimal design of structural elements, and the study of system motion stability and stabilization, as well as control and observation of dynamic systems and processes. The main outcomes of these studies have practical significance. Students are also involved in these research activities.
Scientific and educational seminars are held at the chair. Professors, researchers, master's and post-graduate students of the chair present their research at scientific seminars and international conferences. The chair frequently organizes international conferences discussing current issues and problems in mechanics, with participation from students.
Students prepare research projects, graduation papers, and master's theses in line with the chair's scientific and educational programs and directions.
