Chair of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics

The Chair of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics was established in 1967 by G. Hambardzumyan, A. Talalyan and S. Tumanyan. The first head of the chair was the Ph.D., Associate Professor G. Hambardzumyan. During the years of the Chair’s establishment, prominent scientists S. Tumanyan, N. Petrosyan, L. Nikoghosyan, A. Frangulyan, Ev. Harutyunyan, T. Ghazanchyan worked there. During its history, the chair was headed by R. Hambardzumyan, E. Danielyan, and from 2011 to the present, the head of the chair is Ph.D., Professor V. Ohanyan.

In the 70s, the training of postgraduate students in various directions of probability theory began in Armenia. Academician R. V. Hambardzumyan's efforts led to the creation of a school of stochastic geometry.

In addition to its main scientific direction, the Chair organized general courses in all faculties of YSU.

Majority of the Chair’s staff had received their education abroad (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kiev universities). Among them were Professors E. Danielyan, V. Sarafyan, Ph.D., Associate Professors N. Mesropyan, S. Narimanyan, A. Simonyan, K. Gasparyan. Today, leading specialists continue to teach at the Chair, who carry out extensive scientific and pedagogical activities.

The main scientific directions of the Chair are random processes and their applications, queuing theory, stochastic geometry, mathematical, applied and Bayesian statistics, probabilistic models in bioinformatics.

The Chair implements Bachelor's and Master's educational programs on "Applied Statistics and Data Science". The latter was established in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Graduates have the opportunity to continue their studies at the Master's degree program at the University of Le Mans (France).
