Yerevan State University, as the first and leading university in Armenia, along with the organization of the development of science and education, from the very first years of its establishment, YSU has also paid attention to the issues of physical education, preparation and health promotion of students. For this purpose, since the establishment of the university, specialists, very well known in the republic, have been invited to work, sports groups have been formed, various events and competitions have been organized to arouse interest and love for physical education and sports among students.
Since its foundation, the Chair of Physical Education and Sports - one of the oldest divisions at the university- has organized the teaching of the compulsory subject "Physical Preparation" at YSU, which is now held during 2 academic years, in the 1st and 2nd years.
Since the establishment of the chair, sports groups have been operating at the university, the purpose of which is to promote the high level of physical preparation of students. Now the university has more than 25 teams in 15 sports: football, basketball, volleyball, shooting, handball, boxing, kickboxing, weightlifting, chess, table tennis, wrestling, rock climbing, etc. Student training is held after classes, from the 2nd half of the day. Students with sports experience, as well as beginners from all faculties of the university, may join the groups.
YSU now has sports facilities and sports equipment that meet international standards. Students' physical education activities are organized in futsal, basketball and volleyball large courts, the shooting range, and the physical therapy training hall is designed for students with health issues. The weightlifting and athletics training hall is currently being renovated and expanded and will be open for use in the coming months, offering more opportunities to students. In addition, continuous efforts are taken to create favorable conditions and a comfortable environment for organizing wrestling, boxing and other martial arts and table tennis training.
In addition to intra-university events, national sports competitions, Spartakiads and international meetings are also held in YSU training halls that meet international standards, in which representatives of the teaching staff of YSU Chair of Physical Education and Sports and university students are actively involved.
Since the establishment of the university, intra-university student tournaments, expeditions and excursions to the historical-architectural monuments, attractions and mountain peaks of the republic have been organized.
Yerevan State University, as the leading university of Armenia, participates in the republican inter-university tournaments organized by the RA MoESCS and the Armenian Student Sports Federation, winning prizes and upholding the honor of the university in the field of sports. For example, according to the total calculation of the 2019 Republican Student Sport Games, the YSU team took the 1st place. In the same tournament in 2021, YSU students took first place in shooting, triathlon, table tennis, volleyball, in 2022 in shooting, tug-of-war, fast chess, and in 2023 in boys' shooting championship, girls' 3x3 basketball, etc.
The YSU shooting team is a ten-time champion of the republic in inter-university competition, there are also multiple champions in volleyball, basketball, rock climbing, chess and other sports, who uphold the honor of Yerevan State University in various national competitions and championships simultaneously contributing to the progress of physical culture and sports in the republic.
