About faculty
The Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology was established in 1991 based on the Chair of English Philology at the Faculty of Armenian Philology. It was renamed the Faculty of European Languages and Communication in 2019.
The Faculty of European Languages and Communication carries out multifaceted educational and scientific activities. It runs courses with a major in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian as a second language. The study programs offered at the faculty cover a wide range of subjects in the field of linguistics from translation studies, cross-cultural communication to stylistics and lexicology, from area studies, applied linguistics to English for specific purposes, etc.
The faculty provides a three-tier system of full-time and part-time (the latter since 2007) education: undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate.
The teaching faculty includes corresponding members of NAS RA, doctors, PhD lecturers, full professors, associate and assistant professors, etc. The faculty regularly invites leading specialists from overseas universities to deliver lectures and give master classes. The faculty members are also given a chance to participate in various scientific activities at local and international levels. They undergo training at prestigious international educational and scientific institutions, take part in international research programs, and co-author scholarly papers, which are published in various high-ranked scientific journals.
The faculty cooperates with various international HEIs such as Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland), Boris Grinchenko University (Ukraine), Venice Ca'Foscari, Bergamo Universities, Universities for Foreigners of Perugia and Bologna (Italy), Moscow M. V. Lomonosov State University, Kharkiv V.N. Karazin National University, University of Montenegro, Universities of Granada, Valencia, Madrid, Cádiz, Complutense, Almeria, La Riojaire (Spain), University of Luxembourg, Universities of Koblenz and Halle (Germany), Universities of Lille, Paul Valery, Montpellier 3 and Aix-Marseille (France), etc.
The faculty is also in close cooperation with local HEIs among them Brusov State University, Russian-Armenian University, Khachatur Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University, Vanadzor H. Tumanyan State University, Shirak State University, Yerevan branch of Moscow Lomonosov State University.
Students’ daily life at the faculty becomes even more interesting owing to the educational and cultural events organized by the student councils. Students of the faculty have a chance to study at leading universities abroad as part of exchange programs. They can get a teacher’s qualification by participating in the courses of the pedagogical study block (on a paid basis).
Considering that communication in foreign languages plays a significant role in the modern world, the faculty prioritizes not only language teaching but also the development of communication skills. In addition to their language of choice, the equal mastery of a second foreign language enables faculty graduates to successfully apply theoretical knowledge in practice demonstrating competences and skills that are in line with the international standards. The faculty graduates work in scientific and educational institutions of Armenia and abroad, embassies, local and international organizations, state and government positions, private enterprises, and elsewhere.
