About the program
The Department of Cultural Studies of YSU, as a separate unit of the Faculty of History, has been operating since the 2002-2003 academic year. The chair of Cultural Studies, which was established in January 2007, is responsible for the compilation and implementation of the department courses. Experienced specialists in the department teach the all-university subject "Cultural studies", presenting theoretical and practical main disciplines related to the field of culture.
Admission requirements
Admission is based on the results of exams in the "Armenian Language and Literature" (written), "Foreign Language" (written) or "Armenian History" (written).
The aim of the program
The program aims to train specialists in the fields of cultural studies, cultural theory and history, cultural policy, and modern cultural processes, teaching history, and cultural studies.
Advantages
Professional training in the Department of "Cultural Studies" is carried out in three main complexes:
- The Complex of Cultural Theory Includes an introduction to cultural studies, culture in the humanities system, anthropology, cultural anthropology, visual anthropology, historical anthropology, culture of everyday life, philosophy of culture, archaeology, ethnography, museology, and many other scientific systems investigating culture.
- The Cultural History Complex includes the history of world culture, regional cultures, and Armenian culture.
- The Complex of Cultural Policy and Contemporary Cultural Processes includes cultural policy and cultural heritage, politics and culture, gender and culture, Armenian identity, contemporary religious and urban culture, cultural tourism, and other courses.
Upon the completion of the program, students will have the following abilities and skills:
Systematization and theoretical analysis of multidisciplinary knowledge about culture, the correct combination of the realities of culture with a specific historical era, to perform cultural analyses and studies,
- Analyze the patterns of historical developments of world and Armenian cultures,
- General knowledge about the development of humanities and social sciences and current trends in the study of cultural phenomena in them,
- Knowledge of the principles, principles, and models of cultural policy, knowledge of the principles and practices of cultural management, recognition, description, and characterization of archaeological monuments and ethnographic realities,
- Systematic knowledge of the popularization of cultural heritage, museumization, the role and functions of museums,
- Abilities to recognize, describe, and characterize the state of preservation of the cultural landscape, outdoor sanctuaries, and monuments.
Career opportunities
Graduates of the Department of Cultural Studies receive the qualifications of cultural theorists and researchers of cultural history, cultural managers, and experts of current cultural processes, which enables them to work in the RA ESCS Ministry, in the field of the RA Civil Service, in relevant departments of the RA Government, in regional cultural centers, various museums of Armenia, tourism, non-governmental organizations that carry out social research, mass media, as well as in international organizations that carry out social, cultural and public programs.
