Chair of Physical and Colloid Chemistry
The Chair of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry was founded in 1927. The Chair's founders were L. Rotinyan and H. Chaltikyan, who were the heads of the Chair for different years. Later, Professors L. Melkonyan and N. Belyeryan also led the Chair.
The first research in the Chair of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry dealt with chemical thermodynamics. Other studies were then carried out, including:
Discovery of the kinetics and mechanism of interaction between benzoyl peroxide and amines by H. Chaltikyan,
The study of the problems of polymerization of monomers in emulsion by Professor L. During the years of Melkonian activity,
The study of the kinetics and mechanism of decomposition of peroxides in the presence of amines and their metal complexes.
The main directions of the Chair's scientific research are:
Studies of the structure and physical and chemical properties of solutions: molecular interactions and chemical transformations of biologically important compounds in liquid media and micellar systems,
Surface interactions: spectroscopic study of normal and reversed micelles of surfactants in aqueous and organic media,
Study of thermodynamic properties such as volumetric and rheological properties;
Studying the properties of nanoparticles related to biomedical systems in systems in the colloidal range, such as micellar systems of surfactants, colloidal solutions of bioactive substances (proteins, vitamins, liposomes),
Study of the effect of the nature and composition of mixed solvents on the behavior of nanoparticles,
Theoretical study of molecular interactions: theoretical calculations, molecular spectroscopy, covering not only chemical but also biological systems.
The Chair of Physical Chemistry has enriched its theoretical and experimental base due to its involvement in international and local grant programs, which in turn is related to the development of scientific directions directly. Its most important expression is the physicochemical studies of biological systems based on both macroscopic and microscopic approaches.
The Chair is equipped with state-of-the-art scientific research equipment and methods:
Jneway 4330 conductivity and pH meter,
Anton-Paar, DMA 4500 density meter,
Parr 1455 solution calorimeter,
Sita science surface tension measuring device,
Nicolet Fourier transform IR spectrometer with ATR attachment,
Specord 50PC Electron Absorption Spectrophotometer,
Cary Eclipse (Varian) fluorescence spectrophotometer,
LiteSizer 500 Light scattering, Anton-Paar lighting device,
Gaussian 98 Gaussian 03 software.
With the listed equipment, research is carried out in the Chair, studying the properties and behavior of nanoparticles related to systems of biomedical significance of biological molecules, studying solutions and their thermodynamics, etc.
