The Faculty of Biology of Yerevan State University was founded in 1934, but the origins of its history begin from the very first day of the university's foundation. The faculty is one of the main scientific and educational centers for training specialists in various fields of biology in Armenia.
The faculty operates university research centers: the Center of Excellence for Applied Biology and the Innovative Center for Microbial Biotechnology and Biofuels. There is also a research institute of biology, where scientific laboratories operate. The institute conducts scientific research mainly in molecular and cellular biology, molecular biophysics, membrane biophysics, biochemistry, botany and mycology, microbiology, microbial and plant biotechnology, human molecular genetics and cell genetics, genetic engineering, zoology and histology, human and animal higher nervous physiology, as well as in the direction of ecology and environmental protection of biocenoses.
Prominent scientists of the faculty cooperate with specialists from scientific and educational organizations of the USA, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, etc., they also act as guest lecturers with lectures and scientific reports. The faculty regularly undergoes training in prestigious international educational and scientific institutions and is also involved in international research programs.
The faculty has a three-level educational system: Undergraduate, Master's, and Postgraduate.
Undergraduate students have the opportunity to voluntarily (on a paid basis) participate in the courses of the pedagogical educational block and receive a teacher's qualification. Students' theoretical knowledge is strengthened during training practices held at YSU training bases in Tsaghkadzor and Hankavan. Professional internships are also conducted in various research, production, and medical organizations, as well as in the agencies of the RA state administration system. Pedagogical practice is also organized at Yerevan schools for students participating in teacher qualification courses in the third and fourth year of the bachelor's degree.
Within the framework of exchange programs, students of the faculty have the opportunity to study at prestigious universities abroad. Along with their studies, they actively participate in the events organized by the Student Council and the Student Scientific Society, as well as the Charles Aznavour cultural center operating at the university, thanks to which student life becomes more interesting and attractive.
The field of work of graduates of the faculty is multi-branched: educational and scientific institutions (universities, public schools, research institutes), agencies of the RA state administration system, various fields of environmental protection, food industry, biotechnology. Many of the faculty's graduates are internationally renowned scientists who have successfully worked and are currently working in leading scientific and educational centers in foreign countries.
