General information
Wildlife has a unique role in the origination, preservation and circulation of infectious diseases. 71.8% of all known zoonoses are imported from wildlife. Wild animals serve as the main reservoir of human and domestic animals’ diseases. The wide distribution of viral and bacterial pathogens and their vectors is ensured by the natural movement of animals. Migratory birds are of great importance in this interbiocenotic circulation, as they cross international borders during the migration, transporting infected carriers throughout the globe. Although Armenia hosts more than 200 migratory bird species, the latter have never been the subject of such investigation. The proposed project is the first comprehensive study identifying the role of migratory birds in the transportation, dissemination and conservation of vector-borne diseases’ pathogens. The selected laboratory and field modern tools will allow to find out in Armenia the existence of 5 targeted diseases which are emerging in the world. Based on the analysis of the obtained data, the possible scenarios of geographical expansion of the pathogens will be modeled. The final results will be formalized as scientifically based recommendations.
