General information
The object/subject of the study of this grant project will be the literary elaborations of the «Daredevils of Sassoun» («Sasna Tsrer») epic and the manifestations of the epic material in different types of art, in other words, the multimodality of the epic material (painting, sculpture, bas-relief, miniature, illustration, screenplay, cinema, etc.). The epic «Daredevils of Sassoun» and the texts derived from it (Tumanyan, Isahakyan, Charents, Oshakan, Manvelyan, Vagharshyan, Siras, Sital, Sarmen, Tarontsi, Kheranyan, Hovhannes, etc.) will be considered in entirely new research frame. We will draw parallels between North-Eastern European – Estonian, Latvian, and Karelo-Finnish epics («Kalevipoeg», «Lachplesis», «Kalevala»). Of course, we will focus mainly on «Kalevipoeg», that’s why our collaborator is one of the professors of Tallinn University. We will generate new knowledge based on modern literary and social science methods (C. S. Peirce, F. de Saussure, Y. Lotman, Um. Eco, M. Foucault, P. Bourdieu, R. Wodak, Jan Assmann, A. Assmann, and others). The work of the group will have an interdisciplinary character, which will be based on interdiscursivity that will contribute to the internationalization of Armenian studies and epic studies.
