General information
While language endangerment is a prevalent global issue, and its severity is intricately tied to the rapid pace of globalization, the problem is also influenced by various processes and conditions that can be labeled as domestic-level variables. The objective of this research project is to scrutinize the connection between Azerbaijan’s language policy and the endangerment of languages spoken in the country, including Iranian languages. This project seeks to question the role of Azerbaijan’s language policy as a component of the applied toolkit for the nation-building policy pursued over decades. Not only does the policy fail to create and ensure equal conditions for the use and preservation of languages spoken in Azerbaijan, but it also contributes to their weakening, intensifying the threat, and potentially leading to their ultimate loss. This research project will delve into this issue, with a specific focus on endangered Iranian languages, namely Kurdish, Talyshi, and Tat, spoken in Azerbaijan. The essence of this research extends beyond the examination of Azerbaijan’s language policy as a crucial element in nation-building. It also delves into the linguistic behavior of affected populations, notably the Kurds, Talyshis, and Tats.
