International Center for Advanced Studies
The International Centre for Advanced Studies (ICAS) was established on April 29, 1999, by the order of the Rector of Yerevan State University (YSU) with the aim of combining the fundamental and applied scientific potential of YSU and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia, developing joint programs to enhance the quality of education, as well as strengthening and expanding international (including regional) relations. From its inception until 2024, the Director of ICAS was Georgi Poghosyan, Doctor of Physical-Mathematical Sciences, while from 2024, the position is held by Prof. Anahit Balabekyan, Doctor of Physical-Mathematical Sciences. From 1999 to 2010, the Council of ICAS was chaired by Professor Alexei Sissakian, Director of JINR, Academician at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In honor of the founding member, Academician Alexei Sissakian, since 2011, the center has been named after him.
Currently, ICAS conducts:
Scientific research in the fields of theoretical and mathematical physics, as well as theoretical and experimental nuclear physics.
The organization of scientific schools, conferences, and working seminars for young scientists from JINR and JINR participating countries.
The involvement of highly qualified scientific personnel from JINR and other international centers in the process of lecturing, supervising students, and guiding the scientific work of postgraduate students.
The main scientific research at JINR is focused on the Lie algebra, classical and quantum integrable and super-integrable systems in spaces with constant curvature, symmetry breaking in variational and differential equations, ultra-symmetric and precisely solvable models in classical quantum mechanics, and microscopic theory of nuclei.
ICAS collaborates with various laboratories at JINR, including the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (Prof. S. Vinitsky), the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems (Profs. I. Adam, A. Solnishkin), the High Energy Physics Laboratory (Prof. M. Kadikov). In addition, ICAS maintains partnerships with numerous renowned scientific institutions and universities worldwide, such as the University of Minnesota, USA (Prof. W. Miller), the University of Montreal, Canada (Profs. P. Winternitz, I. Patera), the University of Lyon, France (Prof. M. Kibler), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Profs. B. Wolf, N. Atakishiev), the University of Guadalajara, Mexico (Prof. A. Yakhno), the Brno University of Technology (Prof. Karel Katovsky), the Institute of Physics, Minsk (Profs. Y. Kurochkin, V. Otchik), and others.
ICAS regularly organizes lectures and thematic seminars conducted by renowned invited scientists in nuclear physics and mathematical physics, including Professors A. Belavin, D. Fursaev, and S. Vinitsky.
