The poems of Nizar Qabbani, one of the most famous poets of the Arab world, presented in Armenian
An event dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Syrian writer Nizar Qabbani, one of the most famous poets of the Arab world, was held at the Chair of Arabic Studies, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, YSU, with the support of the Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Republic of Armenia.
Nizar Qabbani was a politician and poet, who wrote on love, religion, and patriotism, addressing women's rights and freedom issues in his works and emphasizing the role of women in Arab society. Some of his patriotic poems were also turned into songs.
Students studying at the Faculty of Oriental Studies translated Qabbani's poems from Arabic into Armenian and presented them at the event.
Mikayel Hovhannisyan, Vice-Rector for Development and Innovation, welcomed the attendees and, emphasizing the importance of the event, noted that initiatives of this kind contribute to making the educational process more effective and provide students with additional knowledge and skills.
"Studying literature is the cornerstone of the profession of Arabic scholar, since fiction provides in-depth knowledge of the country and its people," said the Vice-Rector, adding that Nizar Qabbani is one of those authors who was able to interweave tradition and development trends of that time in his works.
Nora Arisyan, Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Republic of Armenia, thanked the professors and students interested in Syrian literature and highlighted the great efforts made by the students. "Nizar Qabbani did not want his poems to be translated, worrying that the translations would not fully correspond to the original. The Armenian students have done quite a difficult job, and I am sure that thanks to their Armenian translations, others will be given the opportunity to learn Qabbani’s literary works."
Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Professor Ruben Melkonyan, speaking about the great contribution left by Nizar Qabbani, noted that through his works he speaks to the world in a universal language, which is the language of the truth, based on the principle of professing true universal values and spreading them all over the world through fiction. The dean also emphasized the importance of the study of oriental literature for future orientalists.
It should be noted that the teaching staff and students of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, as well as representatives of the Syrian Arab Republic Embassy to the Republic of Armenia participated in the event.
