Aiming for the top: The formula for industry success
Hayarpi Hovhannisyan's love for the natural sciences and chemistry played a crucial role in shaping her career path. Her journey began at the YSU Faculty of Chemistry, which served as the starting point of her professional success. Following her significant achievements during her studies, YSU student Hayarpi Hovhannisyan was awarded the title of YSU Best Student.
Hayarpi graduated from the YSU Chemistry Faculty with a bachelor's degree in "Food Safety," successfully defending her thesis with excellent results in 2023. Now she is studying in the 2nd year of the eponymous master's program.
During her school years, she participated in several Olympiads, and her achievements in these competitions deepened her interest in chemistry. Her close engagement with the field during her student years and the opportunity to continuously develop her skills paved the way for new discoveries in chemistry.
"Choosing a natural science subject is obligatory, the path is rather challenging, but at the same time, the field constantly offers opportunities for growth and progress, which is a motivation for new discoveries. That's why I think I didn't make a mistake in choosing my major," says the YSU student.
Hayarpi is now applying the theoretical knowledge she gained at the university in practice by conducting research at the Research Laboratory of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at YSU.
"Currently, I am involved in a grant program funded by the Higher Education and Science Committee of the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport, titled "Study of Physicochemical Properties of Wild Plants, Isolation of Bioactive Compounds, and Study of the Possibility of Application in Various Fields of Production". As part of the program, we are examining various physicochemical properties of plants with biological activity," Hayarpi pointed out.
The YSU Best Student also co-authored a scientific article published in the 1st quarter of the Elsevier Publishing House, peer-reviewed journal Heliyon. The article titled "Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity and Heavy Metals Content in Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) Growing Wild in Armenia", presents research on licorice roots collected from five provinces of Armenia. The study evaluated their antioxidant activity, analyzed and compared the amounts of some target heavy metals, tannins, flavonoids, and anthocyanins.
Among her achievements, Hayarpi highlights her involvement in public service through the YSU Student Council. "From 2021 to 2024, I was a member of the YSU Student Council Presidency, where I focused on addressing student issues, proposing solutions, and representing their interests and rights within the university's governing bodies. I continue to serve as a student member of the faculty's scientific council to this day."
The YSU Best Student has been working as a chemical technologist at Khachatryan Mobilservice LLC for a year. Reflecting on her achievements, she highlights the significant role of both her employer company and the university. She credits the job opportunity to the successful collaboration between YSU and the private sector.
Hayarpi believes that every citizen of the Republic of Armenia should strive to excel in their profession, or at least aim for excellence, to contribute to a stronger nation and a well-established society.
