The professor asked us to address him by his first name, and addressing certain professors by their last name was not acceptable at all: YSU student on Aalen University
YSU student Roza Vardanyan is studying the operations of well-known German companies in Germany, while also seeking solutions to existing challenges in human resource management. She studied for three years in the "Public Administration" bachelor's program at YSU Faculty of International Relations and, in her fourth year, participated in the Erasmus+ program, spending six months in Germany at Aalen University to explore international practices and further enrich her knowledge.

At Aalen University's Business Management Department, Roza Vardanyan chose subjects such as "Fundamentals of Marketing," "International Human Resource Management," and "Management".
"During the course, in the 'Fundamentals of Marketing' subject, we analyze how markets operate and in which directions strategies are implemented. We study the activities of well-known German companies like 'Porsche' and 'Mercedes'. Additionally, the professor often brings examples from local service industry organizations, showing how customers are divided into different social groups," said Roza Vardanyan.
The YSU student is also participating in practical work in Germany. She mentioned that in the "Digital Marketing" course, each student selects an organization and analyzes its strengths and weaknesses, developing key strategic directions and presenting the buyer's profile.
In the "International Human Resource Management" course, students, divided into groups, try to solve sectoral problems as HR specialists during each lesson.
Roza is also studying the skills and methods of writing academic papers, which will assist her in conducting research in the future.

YSU student is convinced that the most important factor in studying abroad is not just academic progress, but also determination and the desire to achieve one’s goals. "Although I have excellent academic performance, I can say that this is not the most important factor for studying abroad. It all depends on how determined you are and what steps you take to achieve that goal. Many students do not have excellent grades, but they manage to continue their studies abroad since they know why they want to study abroad and what they want to gain from the experience. They apply for scholarships from various organizations, participate in international programs, ensure they have the required documents for the application process, and prepare well for interviews."
Talking about the attitude of professors at Aalen University, Roza emphasized the caring and supportive approach of professors both at YSU and at Aalen University. "Abroad, professors maintain a friendly and respectful attitude toward students. Although the main language of instruction is English, they are very willing to assist with any issues related to German, clarifying any unclear points. Communication with professors is possible not only in class but also through out-of-class meetings and emails. In this regard, the attitude of professors at both YSU and Aalen University is generally similar."
However, Roza was surprised by the approach of some professors abroad. She perceived the professors' overly informal manner as a cultural shock. "The lack of formality was astonishing. For example, during the first session of one of our subjects, the professor asked us to address him by his first name, addressing certain professors by their last name was not acceptable at all."
Roza Vardanyan also touched on the technical facilities of YSU and Aalen University, noting that both universities have the necessary equipment and resources to provide a high level of education. "However, one noticeable difference is the teaching methodology. At Aalen University, practical assignments, team and research work, as well as the solving of real-world problems, are emphasized during all courses."
The YSU student affirms that living in a multicultural environment has many advantages, most importantly fostering free and independent thinking.
"It helps better understand people and become more tolerant, learn new languages, and understand the traditions, holidays, and customs of other countries. Adapting to such an environment also develops flexibility and independence. The only downside is cultural shock, but you eventually overcome it," she says, adding that studying abroad has broadened her worldview, and consequently, her range of interests has expanded. In Germany, she has started exploring areas she had never been interested in before.
Roza Vardanyan has not yet decided which field she will apply her knowledge to upon returning to Armenia, but she is convinced that she will be able to find a path in her homeland that aligns with her interests and goals.
