New research project: Acid-resistant systems in neutrophil bacteria
In nature, bacteria frequently encounter various environmental changes, including shifts in acidic conditions, which can impact their metabolism and bioenergetic properties. Research in this field is crucial for both theoretical and applied biology, including areas such as medicine and biotechnology. A research team led by researcher Heghine Gevorgyan from the Laboratory of Microbiology, Bioenergetics, and Biotechnology at YSU Institute of Biology is conducting studies in this direction.

The scientific project titled "Bioenergetic Properties of Acid-Resistant Systems in Escherichia coli Bacteria," has received funding through the "Women Leaders Advancement Program-2024" competition, announced by the Armenian Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports. Project leader Heghine Gevorgyan discussed the research conducted as part of the project.

Research Purpose and Directions
Our research is focused on studying the biochemical and bioenergetic parameters of acid-resistant systems in bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli. Bacteria often appear in suboptimal conditions, sometimes in highly acidic environments. To withstand these conditions, they possess specific mechanisms, the study of which will provide insight into how they adapt and function in such environments.
Research Methods and Collaboration
Our scientific team works with specially selected bacterial strains, including mutants provided by our foreign partner, Professor Kirsten Jung from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. The research employs various methods, including the study of growth parameters, bioenergetic characteristic analysis, and the identification of bacterial metabolic regulation mechanisms. We regularly discuss the results of our research with international partners through online meetings. Planned reciprocal visits and discussions with our foreign partner will further strengthen collaboration and increase the effectiveness of the project.

Applicability of Research Results
The topic is highly relevant, and we aim for the research outcomes to be applicable in various fields, including medicine and biotechnology. We also include this research direction in our students’ graduation paper topics, which allows them to acquire new theoretical knowledge and modern methodological skills.
Research Team
Placing the importance of involving young researchers in scientific work, our team includes both PhD and master's students. The team comprises PhD students Tamara Abaghyan, Hripsime Petrosyan, and master's students Tatev Nazaryan, and Meri Hayrapetyan. It is of great importance to us that young researchers develop their professional abilities practically and contribute to the field of science.
We have high expectations for the results of this research and are confident that it will lead to new discoveries.
