Education beyond borders: The story of YSU student Roza Mkoyan
Roza Mkoyan, a 4rth-year student in the "English, French, and Communication" bachelor's program at YSU Faculty of European Languages and Communication, has been interested in literature and languages since her school years. As she describes it, this was not just a school interest but a true goal, aimed at achieving her dreams and discovering new horizons. Her aspiration to delve deeply into literature and fully understand it led Roza to YSU, providing her with the opportunity to study abroad during her educational journey.

When education becomes not only a means of acquiring knowledge but also a path to self-discovery, the exploration of cultures, and the shaping of worldview, it transforms into a meaningful life experience. Roza Mkoyan has traveled this path with great passion and curiosity, delving into the world of languages and literature. Her story illustrates how education can become a bridge between academic knowledge, cultural experience, and personal development.
"One of my goals was to read my favorite literary works in their original language, to feel the subtleties and nuances that are often lost in translation. I am proud to say that I have not only achieved this goal but have also been able to turn it into a professional path. Through both academic research and intercultural communication, I am now applying this ability in a meaningful and practical way. My education has given me not only language skills but also a deeper understanding of human expression, identity, and culture," says Roza.

As part of the Erasmus+ program, Roza spent one semester at the Catholic University in Ruzomberok, Slovakia, where she gained valuable skills such as time management and problem-solving.
"I participated in courses that expanded my professional perspective. For example, courses like 'English Drama' and 'American Literature' allowed me to explore the works of influential authors in depth, further developing my worldview and appreciation for literary heritage. I also took linguistic courses that deepened my professional skills. Slovak language and culture courses helped me understand Slovakia's heritage from both a cultural and linguistic perspective," she says.
Roza shares that during her studies in Slovakia, she had the opportunity to participate in various cultural events. One of them was the "Cultural Market" program, where international and local students presented their countries. Roza spoke about Armenia, showcasing Armenian culture and heritage while also forming new friendships with people from different cultural backgrounds.
"YSU and the Catholic University in Ruzomberok are different and unique in terms of organizing their educational systems. One of the key differences I noticed was that education at the Catholic University in Ruzomberok was more practical. Active discussions and oral exercises were central to the learning process, which provided an opportunity for interactive learning and the enhancement of critical thinking," Roza highlights when discussing the organization of academic processes.
Although Roza encountered some challenges while studying abroad, one of the main obstacles was the language barrier.

"At first, communication was quite difficult because Slovaks, being a rather conservative nation, tried not to use other languages. However, the situation was quite different at the university, where students eagerly communicated with us in a language that we could all understand. There weren’t many academic obstacles. The main one was the difference in the educational system, particularly regarding the choice of subjects and the structure of exams, but I was able to adapt to this quickly," she notes.
For Roza, education is not just a process of acquiring knowledge but also a path of personal growth and enrichment. According to her, every day spent at YSU has made her more aware, perceptive, and open to new ideas. That environment, the meetings, and the experiences have shaped her worldview, redefined her values, and deepened her self-awareness.
"I believe that true education should challenge, inspire, and create opportunities. YSU has played a crucial role in creating those opportunities. The university has given me not only a solid academic foundation but also encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and grow. The opportunity to study abroad, provided by YSU, became a chance to gain international academic experience, make friends, and apply my knowledge in a new environment," she honestly shares.
Roza is confident that she will continue her educational journey, viewing education as a long-term path that opens up new opportunities. One of her main goals is to demonstrate how the power of language and literature can shape the world.
