YSU hosts Italian Ambassador Alessandro Ferranti
Yerevan State University hosted the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic to Armenia, Alessandro Ferranti. During the visit, Ambassador Ferranti met with YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan to discuss new avenues for cooperation, followed by an open discussion with students, where he answered their questions.
During the meeting, YSU Rector Hovhannes Hovhannisyan outlined the growing partnership between the university and Italian higher education institutions, with a focus on established ties with the University of Milan. The rector noted that the two institutions are actively collaborating, following recent online discussions that set the stage for an expanded partnership.
"We already have an active memorandum of understanding with the University of Milan, initiated by our colleagues in the field of archaeology, and we have decided to continue our collaboration in that direction. At the same time, we plan to develop cooperation in international relations and the natural sciences," the rector noted.
He emphasized that targeted work has already begun in biotechnology and pharmacy, with partners currently exchanging data to finalize the next steps of their collaboration. Discussions also explored deepening cooperation in history and cultural studies, with a particular emphasis on cultural anthropology. According to the rector, the current strategy is to focus on these high-priority areas with the potential for future expansion.
Alexander Markarov, Head of the YSU International Cooperation Office, stressed the importance of continuity, noting that consistent and steady efforts are the cornerstone of successful international relations. He pointed out that YSU possesses extensive experience in international cooperation, particularly in traditional arts and cultural studies. Furthermore, he suggested that the involvement of archaeologists in various expeditions can pave the way for new joint initiatives.
"Our initial experience with this collaboration, which began several years ago, has demonstrated the vital importance of continuity. We have now reached a point where we can undertake significant work and build a truly robust and productive partnership," Markarov stated, adding that the relationship is developing in a professional as well as friendly atmosphere.
Ambassador Alessandro Ferranti also emphasized the importance of academic and research cooperation between the two countries and its further development. He expressed his confidence that the established mutual interest and engagement provide an opportunity to elevate relations into a new, more productive phase.
The ambassador noted that Armenia-Italy relations are currently developing in various directions, with educational cooperation serving as a vital component. He particularly highlighted that ties between universities are often built on a foundation of personal trust and friendship rather than just institutional agreements—a factor he described as essential for ensuring long-term collaboration.
Regarding student engagement, the ambassador noted a surge in interest toward Italy, which underscores the need to further intensify efforts in academic and scientific cooperation. He also highlighted that Italy remains one of the most sought-after destinations for both students and faculty within the framework of Erasmus+ exchange programs.
"Today, we have all the necessary foundations—from air connectivity to established partnerships—and we should capitalize on these opportunities to the fullest," the ambassador said, expressing confidence that the cooperation will continue to evolve and yield new results.
The visit concluded with an open discussion between the ambassador and YSU students.
