STRIKE AT YSU AGAINST MAKING "ARMENIAN LANGUAGE", "ARMENIAN LITERATURE" AND "ARMENIAN HISTORY" SUBJECTS NOT MANDATORY
A number of students of YSU Faculty of Armenian Philology and History organized a strike.
Students complained about the draft law of RA on Higher Education and Science.
According the law “Armenian language", "Armenian literature" and "Armenian history" subjects will be not mandatory.
Students were also supported by faculty lectors, who noted that the project was incomplete and needed to be discussed.
In a conversation with us, Gevorg Gyulumyan, a student of the Faculty of Armenian Philology, the organizer of the strike, said that this strike undertakes precautionary measure. "We think there are many problems with language teaching in non-professional faculties, but the best way to solve those problems is not to pass by the problems."
Speaking to reporters, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Armenian Philology Arshaluys Galstyan said, that we all understand the negative consequences of native language retreat for a small nation.
Mr. Gegham Gevorgyan, Acting Rector of YSU, being informed about the situation at the Faculty, had a closed meeting with the Deans of the Faculty of Armenian Philology and History, the Heads of Chairs and the students who organized the strike.
After the meeting YSU rector answered the journalists' questions.
“There was an agreement to submit the requirement in writing form and to collect the signature in a specific text. If students decide to continue a strike, it must be outside the building. The strike should not interfere with the learning process”. said Acting Rector of YSU.
