YSU PROFESSOR IS ON THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF THE BOOK PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN "CRC PRESS"
One of the world's leading scientific-technological and medical publishing houses, "CRC Press", recently published a book named "Fungal Biotechnology. Perspectives and directions" under the joint editorship of Professor Susanna Badalyan, Ph.D., head of the "Fungus Biology and Biotechnology" Laboratory of YSU Biology Research Institute and her international colleagues.
The above-mentioned book, consisting of 450 pages, includes information on fungal genomics, innovative medical and nutritional applications of fungal biomaterials and metabolites, and fungi as a biofuel source.
Fungi are simple eukaryotic life forms that humankind has used since ancient times in various biotechnological processes (baking, winemaking, medicine, pharmaceuticals, food production, etc.). The perspectives for the biotechnological multi-field application of fungi are great, which depend on the multifaceted study of the biological, morpho-ecological, physiological, genetic, and other features of these organisms.
During the interview, Professor Badalyan presented the history of initiation and implementation of fundamental research in the direction of fungal biology and biotechnology at YSU since the 80s. She stated that even today these areas attract the attention of scientists from the point of view of both basic and applied research, which are current, promising, and prospective.
Referring to the structure and content of the book, S. Badalyan noted that the 16 chapters of the book include the results and theoretical analyzes of the research works of 38 internationally renowned scientists in the field of fungal biotechnology.
Nowadays, scientific pieces of research in the mentioned directions in YSU are carried out at a high international level, as evidenced by articles published in many periodicals by S. Badalyan and her international colleagues, reports presented at international conferences, the publication of the seventh book by the world's leading scientific and technological and medical publishing houses "Springer" and "CRC Press".
According to Professor Badalyan, the publications of "Springer" and "CRC Press" regarding the asexual reproduction in the life cycle of agaricomycetes fungi, the study of genetic information to reveal their biotechnological and pharmacological potential, as well as the prospects of obtaining various biotechnological products of fungal origin are a great contribution to the field of fungal biotechnology. From the point of view of knowledge completion and application, S. Badalyan mentioned that currently, the separate chapters of the four books presented with international cooperation in the mentioned fields are in the process of printing by "Springer" and "CRC Press" publishing houses.
To organize scientific research works in the field of fungal biotechnology at YSU, a collection of genetically identified pure cultures of 580 strains of 180 species were created and preserved in Professor Badalyan's laboratory.
"For several decades, successful research and published books in the field of fungal biotechnology at YSU are a great contribution to increasing the international ranking of the mother university," added Prof. Badalyan.
The published books will be of interest, especially to master's students and post-graduates specializing in the fields of fungal biology and biotechnology, fungal genetics, molecular taxonomy, and phylogeny.
