HOW ARE YSU FOREIGN STUDENTS GOING TO CELEBRATE NEW YEAR
Taking part in holiday celebrations of the country is the best way to learn about its culture. It’s known that YSU cooperates with various universities worldwide and makes it possible for foreign students to get education here. This year they have the opportunity to enjoy the New Year celebrations in Yerevan. ysu.am talked with the students and got to know what they think about the festive atmosphere in Armenia and how they are going to mark the New Year.
Luis-Victor is from Belgium and is a student of the Faculty of International Relations. He tells about New Year Yerevan, about the festive mood reigning at YSU, about his impressions, and the way they celebrate the New Year in his hometown.
“Everything is beautiful in Yerevan and the mood is great. I am sure that the New Year holidays are splendid here and I feel sorry that I won’t be able to be in Armenia on December 31. I think Christmas is a family holiday and it should be celebrated together with family members, and the New Year is a good opportunity to meet with friends and enjoy the holiday. When we have the opportunity to be at the seaside on the New Year, we traditionally jump into the water as soon as it strikes twelve”, added the Belgian student.
Sebastian is from Germany. He has been a student of YSU Faculty of Geography and Geology for a few months.
“On the event of Christmas the professors of our faculty invited us to taste traditional Armenian dish-Khash. Everything was tasty. We surely enjoyed it with “traditional Armenian vodka”. We are spending the holidays in Armenia. We have planned to have a tour about Armenia: I think travelling is the best way of celebrating. As regards Germany, holidays start there with traditional Christmas fairs, however more and more people prefer travelling”, said Sebastian.
Sergey is from Georgia. He is a student of the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology. This year he is celebrating the holidays twice-one with his girlfriend in Armenia and then in Tbilisi with his family.
“I love the New Year atmosphere of Yerevan. I am a DJ and sometimes I perform in clubs during the holidays. In Armenia everything seems even ore wonderful due to my girl friend. I really love her and it’s a great feeling to be next to our beloved person on the New Year. But on December 31 I will be in Tbilisi together with my family. The most interesting tradition we have is when the males gathered at the festive table sing “Tbiliso” song in four voices”, tells the Georgian student.
Shi is Chinese. She is a student of the Master’s course of the Faculty of Armenian Philology. She said that in China they follow the Lunar calendar so they are going to mark the New Year on February 5. “Ai would certainly like to celebrate the New Year in China but we have no holidays in February. I am sure the New Year celebration in Armenia will be great”.
