PECULIARITIES OF KOREAN CULTURE AND DESIRE FOR PEACE: A LECTURE FOR STUDENTS STUDYING KOREAN AT YSU
A meeting-discussion with the representative of “HWPL” Armenian organization was held today for the students studying Korean at YSU. The meeting was held in the Egyptian auditorium of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. The “HWPL” representative told the students about the peculiarities of Korean culture.
Korean studies at YSU started on November 1, 2018. The coordinator of Korean studies at YSU Arthur Israelyan stated that the initiative of organizing the studies of three Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) at YSU had existed for a long time.
“The teaching of two languages had already been started and to coordinate and implement teaching of Korean we started collaborating with the Korean Culture Center in Armenia foundation and came up with a unified program within the frames of which we provided an experimental course for YSU students”, informed Mr. Israelyan.
According to him, more than 250 students from different faculties had enrolled for the course in advance. “ Currently, about 125 students are studying Korean. Due to the support of YSU Rector, we started the program in November and three groups were formed. The course is conducted by Hasmik Chagharyan who studied at Seoul University. The representative of Korean Culture Center in Armenia foundation Pac Hi Su assists her. Besides, we try to involve in this process the Korean natives who are in Armenia on business”.
Arthur Israelyan also informed that the students interested in the Korean language got a classroom at the Faculty of Oriental Studies which is planned to be turned into a center later. “The course of Korean is over at the end of June. The students will take an exam and get certificates”.
At the beginning of the meeting-discussion Arthur Israelyan presented the activity of “HWPL” organization and expressed hope that the event would increase the interest of students in Korea and its culture.
The Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies Ruben Melkonyan stated that Korean studies attract a lot of interest. “We have planned to add new directions to our traditional ones, and Korean studies is among priorities. I want to state on behalf of the faculty that we are ready to put all efforts to establish and develop this direction”.
The “HWPL” representative presented the peculiarities of Korean culture and cuisine, told about the war in Korea, as well as about the desire for peace between North and South Koreas.
At the end of the meeting the students studying Korean at YSU got the opportunity to ask questions in Korean and get answers from the Korean native.
