COMPUTER LAB TO OPEN FOR “APPLIED STATISTICS AND DATA SCIENCE” MASTER PROGRAM
The opening event of the computer lab provided for “Applied statistics and data science” Master program has been held today at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of YSU.
YSU Vice-Rector on Academic Affairs Menua Soghomonyan, the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics Arthur Sahakyan, the representatives of teaching staff and IT organizations, students were present at the event.
“Today is very important for us. We hope that what we have started will succeed”, said Arthur Sahakyan adding that “Applied statistics and data science” Master course proved itself to be successful.
The Dean informed that “Applied statistics and data science” Master course is implemented in collaboration with “IBM” innovation solutions and technology centre working in YSU.
“The head of “Applied statistics and data science” Master program Karen Keryan noted that due to the support of “Webb fountaine” and “2Hz” companies the newly-opened laboratory has been equipped with 12 “GPU”-installed computers. “These computers have the facilities to make it possible to work with big data. The lab will promote effectiveness of “Applied statistics and data science” Master program. Currently the mentioned program had 9 students”, added Mr. Keryan.
According to him, this laboratory is of high importance as the students of this Master program need to apply their theoretical knowledge and to work on different projects after lessons.
The director of “IBM” innovation solutions and technology centre Areg Gevorgyan assured that this program can bring changes to the sphere and the laboratory will increase the efficiency. He thanked the private sector for the assistance in creation of the laboratory.
According to Professor of the Chair of Mathematical Analysis and Theory of Functions Gegham Gevorgyan, this laboratory will create new opportunities for students. “I am very glad today as I see that the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics have a chance to get restart, to give a new stimulus to the sphere and to keep up-to-date. I am grateful to all private companies who assisted in its opening. I am also grateful to the private companies which provided scholarship to the students of this program relieving their parents’ burden”.
YSU Vice-Rector on Academic Affairs Menua Soghomonyan noted that the “Applied Statistics and Data Science” Master program is highly effective. He also thanked the persons in charge for the project who implemented and important mission providing ties between the job market and this Master program.
He expressed gratitude to those companies due to the assistance of which the lab and the educational program are open now.
4 of the 9 students of this program who achieved highest results got 1-year scholarship to cover 50-75% of their tuition fees. 4 local IT companies provided the scholarships for students.
The representatives of these companies expressed willingness to go on assisting this educational program.
“Applied statistics and data science” Master program is functioning in YSU since the academic year of 2018-2019.
The head of the Chair of Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Doctor of Physics and mathematics, Professor Victor Ohanyan informed that in the academic year of 2019-2020 the Bachelor program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics will have a new Bachelor program “Applied statistics and data science” which unites modelling, machinery studies and basis of computer sciences.
The aim of the program is to teach students to use mathematical methods and computer technologies in practical problems.
The graduates of this program will be able to get oriented in modern approaches and algorithms.
According to the lecturer of the “Applied statistics and data science” Master program Vazgen Hakobjanyan, it’s an honour and great responsibility to teach such a program.
