Chair of English Philology
The Chair of English Philology was formed at Yerevan State University based on the Chair of Romano-Germanic Philology founded in 1935. In 1991, based on the foreign language professional departments of the Faculty of Armenian Philology, the Faculty of Romano-Germanic Philology was formed, simultaneously starting the activity of the Chair of English Philology.
Inheriting her distinguished and versatile predecessors, Ph.D., Academician G. Jahukyan, Ph.D., Academician E. Atayan, Ph.D., Associate Professor L. Aloyan, Ph.D., Professor H. Tokmajyan, Ph.D., Professor E. Mkhitaryan's rich scientific-pedagogical experience, the responsibilities of the head of the newly created Chair have been taken over by Corresponding Member of RA NAS, Ph.D., Professor Seda Gasparyan.
The Chair of English philology, which today carries out multidisciplinary educational and scientific activities, provides practical English teaching as the main language, as well as imparts theoretical knowledge in the field of various disciplines of English philology, introduces English teaching skills and facts of geographical and linguistic cultural value. Many leading employees of the Chair conduct interdisciplinary studies, which are published in leading foreign journals, and the form of monographs. The Chair frequently organizes scientific and practical seminars. Skilled Associate Professors and Professors of the Chair participate in scientific presentations in both the Republic and foreign universities.
The Chair is guided by the principle that the transmission of knowledge in a broad sense should serve social progress. It is also fundamental that important scientific achievements are introduced into courses as soon as possible, modernizing their content and giving new knowledge to learners. In connection with the transition to a three-level education system, the Chair has reworked and created new educational programs aimed at providing comprehensive and high-quality professional education.
Taking a leading role in the professional field, the Chair of English Philology always approaches the difficult but important task of raising the quality of specialists with high responsibility, developing the scientific work of the Chair in a number of fundamental directions: applied linguistics, problems related to the pragmatic description of linguistic facts and speech acts, psycholinguistic examination, effective communication, covering genre and linguistic stylistic features of media discourse and forming the student's skills to create English media text based on it, Internet discourse, problems related to language thinking patterns, problems of English lexicology and stylistics, theoretical and practical problems of intercultural communication, translation as a subject of philological examination, etc. Special attention is paid to promoting interdisciplinary studies.
The Chair implements the Undergraduate educational program "English Language and Literature (part-time)" and the Master's degree programs "English and Literature (part-time)", "English and Literature (part-time)", and "Applied Linguistics".
