Vahan Nalbandyan, a student from YSU Faculty of History, participated in the Sunway Sitges Chess Festival in December 2024 and won in the rapid chess tournament.
Since 2013, the Sunway Sitges Chess Festival has been held annually in Sitges, Spain, and is renowned for its prize fund and participation of internationally ranked players. The tournament features both classical and rapid chess formats, which attract leading players from the chess world.
Vahan has been playing chess since childhood and has participated in various tournaments across Armenia and Europe.
Reflecting on his experience at the tournament in Sitges, Vahan highlighted that the most memorable moment was his game against the renowned British grandmaster. According to Vahan, this match was not only a challenge but also an opportunity to gain valuable experience.
Vahan views chess as a tool that contributes to his education, as it enhances analytical abilities and strategic thinking. "Chess cultivates the ability to think and make decisions, which is crucial both in life and in studies," he emphasizes.
Vahan also actively participates in interuniversity student competitions, frequently securing victories with the YSU team.
