Since 1981, the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology has been operating at YSU. The Department of Applied Sociology was established in 1986, and and in 2004 a structurally separate unit was formed: the Faculty of Sociology․
The Faculty of Sociology has a three-level education system: bachelor's, master's, and postgraduate.
The lecturers of the faculty regularly undergo training at prestigious international educational and scientific institutions, and often give lectures as invited specialists at foreign universities. At the same time, the faculty regularly hosts foreign specialists who give lectures, hold seminars and discussions, conduct training courses, and are involved in the faculty's scientific and research life.
The faculty has a rich professional library (including books in foreign languages), where students have the opportunity to acquire the relevant material, to carry out research work․ The faculty has professional chairs, centers and laboratories.
During the organization of educational and scientific research processes, the faculty cooperated and cooperates both intra-university and extra-university, including with various international structures, including: Alicante (Spain), Oldenburg (Germany), Graz (Austria), University of Gothenburg (Sweden), Slovak Medical University, Linz University of Applied Sciences (Austria), etc. Joint programs have been implemented with a number of universities abroad: mutual visits of professors and students, summer schools, research work: among these universities are the USA's J. Mason University, Arizona State University, Germany Frankfurt, Konstanz, Ludwigshafen, Potsdam, Berlin Humboldt, Münster University, Rome Sapienza University (Italy), Norway Stvanger University, Czech Republic Hradec Králové University, University of Bucharest (Romania), Russian Southern Federal University, Urals Federal University, Moscow Higher School of Economics, Magilyov University (Belarus), etc.
Since 2003, the faculty has been cooperating with the University of Connecticut, USA, organizing faculty and student visits, joint research and publications, as well as online lectures․
Thanks to the activity of student structures, student daily life becomes more interesting, and students develop their professional skills and knowledge even more.
As part of exchange programs, students of the faculty have the opportunity to study at prestigious universities abroad.
Graduates with bachelor's and master's degrees in "Sociology" are in demand in state bodies, local self-government bodies, scientific and research organizations, information and consulting organizations, organizations providing community services, educational institutions, health and environmental agencies, design and analytical research centers, expert structures, in the marketing departments of enterprises and organizations of various economic sectors, public opinion research centers, including various media organizations, international and local public and human rights organizations, organizations related to the justice system, regional planning and social support agencies․
