On January 19 of this year, at the initiative of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Armenia, a meeting was held with the representatives of the YSU Faculty of Law.
G. Ghazinyan, Dean of the YSU Faculty of Law, A. Asatryan, Head of the Chair of Europe and International Law, Z. Amatuni, Communication and Prevention Program Manager of the ICRC delegation and A. Arakelyan, Legal Adviser of the delegation, attended the meeting.
Z. Amatuni presented the support provided by the ICRC delegation in Armenia for years to the teaching of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in universities and the holding of student events dedicated to this field (court games, summer school, etc.) and the upcoming plans, which will further strengthen cooperative relations with YSU Faculty of Law.
ICRC representatives informed that this year the ICRC delegation, in cooperation with experts in the IHL field, will initiate the establishment of a school of International Public Law in Armenia. The school will conduct separate courses on cooperation between IPL and related branches of law. G. Ghazinyan, Dean of the YSU Faculty of Law expressed his willingness to continue the long-term cooperation with ICRC pursuing the goal of establishing the school, particularly emphasizing the fact that the teaching staff of the faculty has a wealth of knowledge of the above-mentioned and discussed spheres and may properly contribute to the implementation of them.
The School of Public Law will launch its activity on February 17 with a course titled "IHL and International Human Rights Law", which will be followed by more advanced courses on international criminal, public, refugee, migration and other related branches of law. It is expected that the ICRC delegation, representatives of the YSU Faculty of Law, as well as other partner universities will be present at the courses.
Delegation members represented another ICRC initiative as well. In particular, it is planned to create an Educational Research Lab for International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law, the main goal of which is to promote opportunities for informal education on IHL and related branches of law in Armenia. A. Arakelyan presented the scope of activities of the school in details, discussed the perspectives of cooperation with the Faculty of Law presented and proposed by the faculty in other fields. Agreements were reached to jointly promote the establishment of the laboratory.
At the end of the meeting, it was decided to confirm the agreements with a new memorandum of understanding, which will be signed in the near future.
