As part of the program "Strengthening the Protection of the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty", implemented by YSU Faculty of Law and the Council of Europe, a student report competition was held on the topic of "The Role of CPT Standards and ECtHR Rulings in Protecting Human Rights within the Penitentiary System."
The goal of the event was to promote the comprehensive study and analysis of the reports of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) and relevant rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) regarding Armenia. The event was attended by representatives from the Penitentiary Service, the Office of the Human Rights Defender, the Office of the Representative on International Legal Matters of Armenia, and various non-governmental organizations.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, H. Khachikyan, delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of ongoing cooperation between graduates and the faculty, which would primarily contribute to raising awareness about international human rights standards within the penitentiary system and provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their analytical skills.
Such events contribute to a deeper understanding of human rights in the penitentiary system, promote academic engagement, and help shape the agenda for the better treatment of persons deprived of liberty in Armenia, as well as the protection of their rights. The event served as an excellent occasion to highlight the significance of Human Rights Day, through the preparation and presentation of valuable reports on the relevant issues.
Sixteen undergraduate students from the Faculty of Law submitted applications to participate in the competition. They successfully presented their visions for strengthening the protection of the rights of persons deprived of liberty.
At the conclusion of the competition, third-year Law Faculty students Elen Asatryan, Diana Simonyan, and Levon Burnazyan secured the top three positions.
