Samvel Andreasyan, a graduate student from YSU Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics, secured 3rd place at the ICPC Challenge Championship Programming Contest held in Dongguan, China, earning a second-class award.
About 100 experts in Olympic programming from over 30 countries were invited to the contest, including students, professors, coaches, and organizers of the ICPC contest. Participants also included medal winners from various years of the ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest, as well as champions of the ICPC Challenge online contests from the past four years. Many participants in this "grandmaster" competition were highly ranked programmers, according to the popular Olympic programming website www.codeforces.com.
The participants were tasked with solving an optimization problem within a 5-hour timeframe. There was no effective algorithm that could produce the correct answer within a few seconds. Consequently, each participant needed to develop an approximation algorithm for their tests. The closer the program's output was to the correct answer, the higher the score for that test, which was calculated using a specific formula.
The organizers awarded 1 first-place prize, 3 second-place prizes, and 6 third-place prizes. Additionally, incentive prizes were planned for the participants who took the next 10 places.
The winner was Hirotaka Yoneda from Japan.
Among the invited coaches from various countries, Armen Andreasyan, coach of the YSU teams, Assistant Professor at the Chair of Programming and Information Technologies, received the "Outstanding Mentorship" award.
