Chair of Biophysics
The Chair of Biophysics was established in 1963, and in 1964, the Department of Biophysics was created on the foundation of the chair. The chair's founder was Professor Gerasim Panosyan, who headed the chair for about 28 years. Then, for different years, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Sergey Martirosov, and Corresponding Member of RA NAS, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Emil Gevorgyan headed the chair.
Since 2001, the Chair of Biophysics has been headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Poghos Vardevanyan.
Since its establishment, the department has carried out research activities in various directions, in particular, ultra-weak light emission and free radical processes in various biological systems, as well as the employees of the department have and are carrying out studies of structural-operational relationships, mechanisms of interaction of biologically active compounds with nucleic acids at the subcellular level, and at the cellular level they are researching functional characteristics of microbial, plant and animal cell membranes in normal and pathological conditions.
In 2002, based on the Chair of Biophysics of the Faculty of Biology of YSU the "Bioinformatics" department was introduced in the faculty, which enables students to specialize in biophysics, healthcare, and other fields.
The Chair of Biophysics implements the "Biophysics and Bioinformatics" Undergraduate as well as "Semiphysics", and "Bioinformatics" Master's educational programs.
